Having grown up in the Chicago area, I couldn't possibly say that this this is the best hot dog I've ever had, but it's the best I've had in this state. In Chicago, I remember always asking for "the works" and then waiting for the surprise (tomatoes, pepperoncinis, jalapeños, bacon, pickles, etc. -- NEVERNEVERNEVER ketchup!), but at this place I usually just go Coney style. Still no ketchup.

Yes, mad props to Good Dog/Bad Dog in the Portland area, but...

Hal, for your list of favorite weiners, put my house down for a BBQ'd dog of your choice. If a ride develops, I'd love to have a bunch of FJR's in my driveway as everyone stops by for a brat. That, I believe, is what would be called a good time.

I think I'll call it "Pig's Dogs" of Tigard, Oregon

:pig_ball:

Hal you will be as big as a freaking house when you get home from this one.

Well, I just got home from my daughter's first Winter Guard competition - and I was sitting there in the stands watching all the kids, and I thought: "Man, I'm gonna have to get a salad once in a while!"

That, and I will no doubt have to double up on my Lipitor.

Everyone's response so far has been great - with few exceptions. This is shaping up really nicely - going to be an interesting exercise in logistics.

2009 if I'm not chasing bonii around the country, 2010 if I am.

And you can come too, Richard !

The best hot dog in the entire universe is the certified official "Fenway Frank" when consumed at Fenway Park in Boston during a Red Sox vs Yankees game. You may think there are better versions of the hot dog available, but ambiance is a big part of the whole "dog" experience.
Oh, by the way, they have proven to taste much better when the Yanks are losing.

+1

Hal,

This might be a helpful link for you to check out before you travel. I've hit a bunch of the places from this sight and found the reviews to be pretty accurate.

My favorite dog is from a place called Gus's in Watervliet, NY. It's been there for over 50 years. Start with half a dozen with the works...trust me they're small.
There is a place called 'Hot Dog Charlie's' in Troy, NY that serves tiny dogs on specially made tiny buns. They are a nice novelty. He has sone special sauce for them too. They're OK, but not great. They also sell tham at the mall in Latham, NY.

That list should be made into a downloadable POI update for GPSes... ;)

Fred W, I'm building a spreadsheet, as well as dropping each location into Streets and Trips. It will be made available to those who wish to challenge their Tums.

Axe, thanks for the link. It will come in handy as I get closer to this thing...

I've been inspired. How about a Hot Dog/Hamburger list?

My #1 draft pick is not necessarily based on taste but, rather, more on its fame ... anyone up for a 15lb burger?!!?

clicky

I suppose that my all time favorite hot dog joints are the lunch trucks parked right off of the Garden State Parkway (the exit # varied) in NJ. They sold Sabrette hot dogs & you could get whatever you wanted on them.

This is a fond memory from my early childhood.

If I was to tell ya' my favorite now, I'd have to say Uncle Al's Hot Dogs. They have several locations... but the one that I visit is on Granby St. in downtown Norfolk, VA.

Rutt's Hut, Clifton, New Jersey. This is my home town, but have lived in S.C. for over thirty years now. When I go home for a visit, going to 'Rutt's' is always high on my list to do. Deep fried, and available in various amounts of 'doneness', you just ask for your pleasure; great fries and onion rings too, and don't forget the birch beer.
I didn't know they are open 24 hours a day. On the way home from a concert I ran over there, it was 2:30 AM and the place is packed. Great hotdogs :yahoo:

The Travel Channel did an episode on this called Hot Dog Heavens. They show it every once in a while, like this past Sunday. Keep an eye out for it.

Pinks was one of them. There was also Nathans Coney Island, a Coney Island in Colorado, Superdawgs in Chicago, some casino in Vegas, and Puka Dogs in Hawaii. There were more, but thats all I can remember.

Hal, I think you're really on to something, maybe you could turn it into an Iron Butt ride, ala National Parks tour.

Zack's in Burlington NC. One of those places where everybody in town goes. The chili's so greasy (read: tasty) it soaks through the bag if you get take out.
