My friend Jamie just registered his 2006 FJR from Iowa today. DMV recorded the VIN, engine number and got the EPA registration marked on the exhaust. Nothing else.

If this is a California bike, you may need to restore the evaporative emission control system for inspection. I actually doubt that it will be looked at and would expect that you will only need to have DMV verify the engine number for registering the repaired vehicle.
Inspection? I'm in California, I'm about to pull my motor to fix a 2nd gear issue and in the process doing a cannisterectomy, because it makes my bike run like **** after it's parked in the sun for an hour or so. Do I have to worry about some emissions gestapo coming after me?
California has no routine emissions inspections, but they do visually inspect motor vehicles at DMV for Title changes. The evaporative canister and PAIR systems are not visible without considerable disassembly, so that is not looked at, but what they do look at are serial numbers and emissions stickers. DMV is mainly responsible for ensuring you own the vehicle and it is not restored with stolen parts.

Thanks for that, I now remember thinking it strange to have to tell DMV the engine s/n when I first registered it. I'm the 2nd owner. I hope me removing the evap canister won't result in it biting me in the *** sometime in the future should I sell the bike.

If you take it off, don't throw it away. Label and put in a box for emergency.

Fully agree with keeping removed stuff n' stuff for the future. It saved my bacon awhile back on a cat equipped diesel dodge truck that recently had to be 'smogged' if you can believe that.

Back on direct topic, I called the engine guy today, he said it's crated and ready for shipping and has been shipped. I'm cautiously optimistic, will feel better when I have a copy of title, bill of sale, and shipping notice in my email inbox.

All righty then.

Got a tracking number and scanned copy of title.

ETA is end of 3/5/2012, or 1 week from today.

It's moved from Harrisburg PA to Bethlehem, PA. (heading East?)

Will keep everyone posted.

All righty then,

them UPS bozos were going to send a 57 foot tractor trailer on a 3 mile long dirt road with no turn-around any where..

Have they not heard of maps.google.com?

Long of short, I called delivery off to la Hondarosa and will be meeting the truck in Atascadero in Old Blue.

Dinks..

For anyone interested, here is what the two bibs connecting the TBA to the charcoal canister look like..
I am interested.

For one thing, where on the inside of the throttle bores do those hose bibs vent to? Can you take a picture of that before you start the reassembly? If you're already deep into it, then never mind this. You've got more important things to do.

Someone previously said they were before the throttle butterflies, which would make the most sense. If so. it must be the holes that you can see in the prior photo. But if that is the case, what are the holes in #2 and #3 going to?

Fred, I don't know, but will look when we pull the motor and swap.

Here is my guess...

Cylinder 1 and 4 on CA bikes have the passage drilled to allow vacuum draw off the canister. Cylinder 2 & 3 are blanked off for Kali bikes, and 1 - 4 blanked for non-Kali models.

Tomorrow, the used, new-to-me motor arrives!

I get to leave work early and meet the 57' semi in Atascadero.

Locals, if you have nothing better to do, PM me, I'll tell you when and where!

ps

I can't begin to tell you how excited I am to have a powerful street bike again...

For all my ranting about how cool the hubbbabuuba is of my Harley, or the dirtiness of Wabs...

I have the need for speed, and them two bikes just mentioned don't have it..

So now that you're comin' down the home stretch, and thinking about the thrill of SPEED again,

No doubt you'll be feeling pretty excited about getting started.

Leak down test results

These numbers taken with a cold engine that had been sitting inside a metal building for 8 months.

I'm pretty happy with them!

Testing technique :

  1.
  2. Set inlet reg to 20 psi
  3. Rotate crank until outlet reg registers max reading
  4. Increase inlet press to 80 psig while holding crank with breaker bar to prevent piston movement
  5. Read and record

Cyl Inlet Reg Diff % Leak

1 80 79 -1 1.3

2 80 78.5 -1.5 1.9

3 80 77.5 -2.5 3.1

4 80 79.5 -0.5 0.6

1 80 79.5 -0.5 0.6

2 80 78.5 -1.5 1.9

3 80 79 -1 1.3

4 80 79.5 -0.5 0.6
