....however we had two days where the distance between fuel was 170 miles.
Dammit Don, what are these miles you speak of?? How many furlongs or fathoms would that be??

Give us a unit of distance we Canucks and the rest of the world can understand.

How 'bout a GS trip in April 2015 :bikes? I mean I'm interested in learning about your 2015 trip as your plans progress.

Mike

Hola Mike, our AZ Beemers Club #89 is still actively working on the planning logistics of the April in 2015 GS Dirt Ride to Real de Catorce and on to Huasteca Potosina. As soon as I have more specific information I will post it up under the Southwest Section of our BMW MOA Forum.

We AZ Beemers have used MotoDiscovery on previous Mexico dirt expeditions for support and we will do this once again in April of 2015. We AZ Beemers have discovered over the years MD Owner Skip Mascorro can put together our dirt trips for less Dinero than we would spend!

Skip, I like this Mexico proposal. I've copied some of the men who have expressed an interest in this, you will recognize some of the names listed here!

Subject: Getting ready for Huasteca 2015

Hi Don,

We always have about six weeks of high intensity around here but it looks like we are seeing some "daylight" and I want to start putting together your Mexico ride for 2015.

My thought is to not concentrate on high miles but to settle in at a couple of places to serve as hubs for exploration or simply to absorb all that is great about Mexico. With that in mind I suggest something that looks a little like this:

Day 1. McAllen
Day 2. Hacienda Santa Engracia
Day 3. Tamasopo - here there are some loops and ride that can stay on pavement or we can mix it up.
Day 4. Tamasopo - a full day to take in the waterfalls and other explorations, a run down to Jalpan, even Xilitla.
Day 5. Real de Catorce - by the back way, hit the Colonial era Mescal distillery, etc.
Day 6. Real de Catorce - ride horses, hike the hills, ride the trails
Day 7. Real de Catorce - more of the same with some loop rides, exploring the old ghost towns.
Day 8. Santiago
Day 9 Exit at McAllen

This is a pretty map friendly event in that there are optional routes. We can get to Santiago by way of some dirt or stick to the pavement depending on the profile of the group.

We can extend the number of days but historically this will begin to eliminate those who still have time constraints and we can keep it at a reasonable price point. We'll go however you want. I do like the pace and the space this one has.
Welcome you feedback amigo.

Hope all is well in your world.

Saludos,
Skip Mascorro

April of 2015 is when AZ Beemers, FJRiders and FJR Dual Sport Donks can make this trip! Skip most of this crew wants dirt, not street; Copper Canyon Veterans!

"Hi Russ, I've copied Skip with this and I will be copying you with another response to Skip in a few minutes. I want mostly dirt, I am buying a Suzuki DRZ 400 just for this trip. After manhandling my BMW F650GS Twin through Copper Canyon I have had enough with 456 lbs. off road, the Suzuki DRZ 400 only weighs 326 lbs.!

We're looking at April of 2015, this seems to be when most of the FJR Forum, AZ Beemers and FJRiders Dirt Donks can make the trip; I don't want to wait until Fall!"

Easter in 2015 is on Sunday, 5th of April. We'd be wanting anytime from April 15 to April 30 of 2015. Most of this group are self-employed/retired!

Great Don...good to know that it passed the first test.
We'll massage it with the details, routes and highlights. We'll have support.
Lets start getting a consensus of a time frame. That would be a good start.
Anytime in spring or fall. Avoid the week before and after Easter.
I'm looking forward to this one!!

Put me down for as much dirt as possible.

Am I going to have the biggest bike again?? I don't want those Federales to hit me with their M16s and face plant me again!!

Hola CHRIS_D, I reaffirmed to Moto Discovery Owner Skip Mascorro that this Copper Canyon Veterans Crew wants more dirt than street. Dirt is where this ride will be at.

It looks like you once again will be on the biggest trailie, this worn out old man is going to a much lighter off road dirt bike. DR 650, DRZ 400 or similar for Papa Chuy Viejo!

Chris you'll love where we're staying in Tamaulipas: Hacienda Santa Engracia is incredible! I've stayed there before with MD, evening horseback riding drinking Tequila ese!

Atencion FJR Forum Mexico Copper Canyon Off Road Adventure Trek Veterans: Do you remember the Rio Urique crossing where Scott - fjrrider turned his Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen into a submarine? Skip Mascorro sent me this picture of that exact location, the Austrian government and KTM Factory is contributing funds to Chihuahua Estado to construct this new bridge over Urique just in case we ever return there! jes' sayin' and nuff said, ese!

Don you must not of heard, but KTM ended up backing out of that deal once they relized that their 'other' KTM (The big 'o' gurl) made it through that crossing with no problem.

HI Don and fellow Amigos de Mexico,I'm already contemplating getting over to Xilitla. Even if you have been there before it is a place that encourages exploration and it seems we never have enough time. We might even stay in the town of Xilitla, a great small Mexico village experience.
We'll be pulling the itinerary pieces together soon and be getting back to you.
Abrazos todos,
Skip Mascorro

Skip Mascorro is currently in Baja California on a MotoDiscovery Tour, but I will send him an email for his return! I've never been to Xilitla!

Thanks for the quick reply Skip, the make up of the group will consist of great off road riders such as yamafitter Bill (was on CC ride with us), Russ "rushes" (also on Copper Canyon ride) and AJ-HotRodZilla; running to the other spectrum of shitty and old dirt riders such as Myself and Tucson Joe.

If there were two dirt routes to each nights destination, one for the hot shoes and one for the old farts, that would be so ideal. You know Tucson Joe and Papa Chuy have no problem with riding Mexico by ourselves, we both have been riding Mexico many times just going it alone.

Old Age and Treachery will Overcome Youth and Skill Any Day! To that end, I plan on purchasing a Suzuki DRZ 400 just for RdeC: Cheating with light weight!

Saludos,

Don Stanley

Don it is great to hear from you.

Just last week I was in discussion with Juan about the itinerary for this event We are close and with the final tours of the season now in the field we are seeing some breathing room to get caught up.

The challenge is getting the right amount of "adventure" in there without pushing that envelope too far. On that question I'll need your input and speculation on the make up of the group.

Lets set a deadline for end of next week to have itinerary firmed up and be ready for you to promote at the FJR Rally. I'll call you next week.

Thanks again Don...hope to see you this summer sometime.
Saludos.

https://www.azbeemers.org/forum/index.php?topic=4449.0 Mi Hermano Skip, I know you're busy attending to business, as things should be! Plus please do not feel I am bugging you, but I do have a Question! Do you think that you may be close to a tentative itinerary and a tentative pricing for our Real de Catorce/Huasteca ride?

We know Easter Sunday in 2015 is April 5 and we will avoid that time frame, we also have agreed on nine days duration for this RdC/Potosina dual sport adventure.

In previous posts to you I'd mentioned setting a group limit size of ten to twelve, I now believe this group could be made larger: A lot of Mexico M/C Vets responded.

Thursday, May 29 kicks off the Southwest FJR Owners Rally that is being held in Silver City, New Mexico; if you had info available, I'd hand out MD flyers to them.

I'd use your info and place it on standard letter size paper, including a photo of Real de Catorce and one of the Potosina pools; in order to get this ball rolling along!

Sincerely yours,

Don Stanley

Tengo el deber de informarle que Pancho Villa se encuentra en todas partes y en ninguna a la vez. In the words of Jose Doroteo Arango Arambula: CHARGE!

Mi Hermano Skip, Listo! I like everything you've described below, it is workable allowing us both Real de Catorce and Huasteca plus Cielo Biosphere. Excelente!

Hasta la próxima,

Subject: Thinking about Mexico

Hi Don,

It was great chatting with you recently.
Wanted to propose an itinerary that I think has it all>
McAllen
Santiago
Galeana
Real de Catorce
Real de Catorce
Cielo Biosphere
Huasteca
Huasteca
Hacienda Santa Engracia
Exit at McAllen
I like the idea of two opportunities for two night stops.
The ride from Galeana - Real can be done on pavement or via an off road mountain route giving us some options.
The unknown for us is the ride to the region of Cielo Biosphere. There are accommodations on sight as well as in vicinity. The timing on this will ultimately determine where we end up in Huasteca. Some nice eco type lodges have popped up that are well positioned for us to offer several optional day rides.
I think we are safe with this concept. It is one day longer but probably would not impact most people and we still are looking a couple hundred dollars either side of $3,000 per rider so not a dramatic hit on the price point.

We are going to do a pre-run of that Cielo -Husateca stretch in the fall. It will allow us to get a better sense of timing and make fresh discoveries that could lend to the event. I can fill in the blanks then but for now I would prepare something based on what we do know, understanding that any deviation will be relatively insignificant and not impact the concept or quality of the presentation.

We are very excited about this ride. It is one that has been on our mind actually for a number of years so to see it materialize with your inspiration and support is special

Let me know and I'll get to work on this. Mil gracias caballero.

Skip
