This September is shaping up quite nicely, with simple day rides to two excellent events. I need a snore hardened veteran to cut some room costs with though.

Well, I am hoping Janet comes with me, but if I am alone I will split with you. I'll have to press her for a commitment and let you know. By "snore hardened" you mean someone whom is accustomed to sleeping with a snorer? If so no problem.

My roomie "Steamer" puts out sum diesel combustion, holy fawk it's terrible on the mind games when trying to go under. One nite I went out to my bike and got out some ear plugs. Bingo :)

He's now since went under the knife (thanks only in part to his g/f!) to fix his all-night snore crap. Thank you Jen!!

I hope Janet can make it, Beth is still teaching so l know she won't make it. If Janet can't come then sounds like a plan thanks

Can someone give a total newbie a 30 second run down on this event? I've never been to a rally and really don't know what goes on and reading this whole thread didn't really help. Being nearby in NW Wisconsin though this is very intriguing. :)

El Toro Joe pretty much nailed it but might be a bit shy on details. Here's a thumbnail schedule of the basics;

Thursday; Arrive, register, meet peeps, dinner on your own but traditionally we've pick a designated location for most people to go to.

Friday; The Rally Rallye think scavenger hunt if your not into the RR then ride with some of the fine folks you met the night before wherever you feel like, dinner on your own, meet and greet with some snacks provided at the hotel.

Saturday; Open House at Two Brothers Power Sports with coffee and donuts, go ride to some cool place of your choosing, banquet at the hotel meal included in the rally fee with door prizes galore.

Sunday; Say good-bye to all your new friends and ride home.

We've got a bunch of routes for people to choose from but there won't be any organized group rides. Everybody is pretty open to letting new folks join in and small groups of tourists and speedster kind of form up on their own.

For good representation of what this year's NAFO will be like look through the CFO threads you can start he with Reports From The CFO Jacuzzi Suite :big_boss:

I haven't been to this specific event but, generally: Ride, Eat, Drink, Tell a few lies, inflate a few stories, sleep, rinse, repeat ...

Get there...meet like minded folks...go riding, have lots of fun. Then ride home, with lots of great memories.
Shorter version of Rick's but pretty much sums it up... I've been to several gatherings and have never left thinking, "Why the hell did I do that??" More like, "Holy hell that was fun!! Why didn't I do that sooner!" B)

NAFO is anything that you make it for yourself. All of the things that are mentioned above can be part of it, but no one will make you do anything that you don’t want to. For me the FJR gatherings are an excuse to take a vacation that is based around a complete sense of freedom. I have been to all three “NAFOs” and look forward to the next one. Although I had already done an Iron Butt run, the first NAFO in Golden, CO. was my first opportunity (excuse) to do some real traveling on a motorcycle. I have been hooked ever since. For me, part of the fun is preparing for and figuring out how to pack for a long weekend on a motorcycle. Now my challenge is to dream up an interesting route to La Crosse in order to extend my “freedom vacation” at least three or four days.

I have attended the last few “CFO” meets and can tell you that Rick puts on a fine event. As for competing in the “Rally Rallye”; of course you don’t have to, but it is great fun, and at only eight hours long is a perfect introduction to the world of bonus rallies. And to top things off, the region around La Crosse has some great riding opportunities for people that like twisties and for people who just like to gawk at the scenery as well.

NAFO is a perfect opportunity (excuse) to get out of the house and have some serious fun and create some memories that will last a lifetime. Just go there.

I guess I will be looking to split a room with someone...or maybe we can get a NAFO room share thread going.

Update: Looks like I'll be splitting a room with Petey.

Good post.

Just don't ride with guys that will pass RVs 10 at a time on some main CO road. That guy will get you a ticket.

Or not.

As you can see from the above comments, NAFO is a social and riding event. It is generally informal, as are all FJR gatherings, and I have been to quite a few. so you make of it what you like.

Since this is NAFO, it will probably be pretty big and sometimes people who come to a big rally as their first one feel a little left out, especially if you are not outgoing. Make a point of saying Hi to anyone who looks like he/she might be riding an FJR and you will be greeted in a friendly manner. This is especially true in the parking lot gatherings or the bar. Introduce yourself and you will make a lot of new friends who share a common interest.

Thanks for the responses. I don't drink, but that doesn't stop me from having a good time. I'll have to see what I can do to get down there.

its worth it just to walk the parking lot at the event and see what others have done to their FJR. Some have every farkle known to man...

And more importantly - it gives you an excuse to get on that FJR and ride to someplace you haven't been or would not ride to otherwise!
