Thanks for keeping the list tabulated and updated, Barry! You're hired! As it stands for me, I'm almost hoping I stay unemployed so I can make the ride, otherwise I may end up missing out on Friday's leg and have to catch up with the group that evening. Or, even worse, have to miss the whole damn thing If I have to work that weekend!

Y'all are makin me hungry...
Can hillbillys show up uninvited?

I've never ate clam chowder...

I'll try anythin once...

:)
Never had clam chowder ? You HAVE to come! And bring some of your hillbilly friends with you B)
I don't have any friends... :(
Dang, go see Bust. And bring a sheep costume or some other wool outfit. You'll have a new mate friend fer life!

De Oppresso,

Some random Maine area thoughts for you.

Ray's regional BMW group always uses this place as the annual get-together. Popham is just down the river road from Bath, maybe 15 miles. I added this link only to offer more area info.

Years ago, was Christina's Bakery. (actually ordered my wedding cake there longgggggggg time ago). Will scope out the parking within the week as one side is on a hill going downtown, so may park across the street next to the sheriff's dept. I think I remember a large outdoor covered porch. Maybe I can see if they could reserve a chunk of it for us.

Good general area link

and of course, my personal favorite in Bath, as my mother-in-law is a partner: Brick Store Antiquesclicky for BrickStoreAntiques

20 minutes from Freeport to Bath, via I-295 to Brunswick and then rt. 1 highway. Get off at High street exit (rt. 209) and the bakery is on your left. Easy enuf.

D.O.L. (CJ), if driving gets ahead of schedule Friday, can lead you through Commercial street Portland. J's Oyster Bar is good, along with too many other spots. Easy loop off the highway, up through the Eastern Promenade view of Casco Bay, then direct back onto the route. Easy.

The South Freeport spot I see mentioned will be good. All in all for the trip: good!

My thoughts on rt. 1 after Bath: yes, has some bottlenecks due to tourists, but I don't think our date will be a problem, honestly. I don't like the southern end, such as Ogunquit, Kittery, etc.

Thanks for your hard work. Due to under-employment as a carpenter, may be bikeless at the time of the ride but will keep my fingers crossed to attend.

Sull

Thanks for the suggestions, Sully. The route CJ and I have been working on has us cruising out to the Cape Elizabeth lighthouse, then up to the Portland Head light on Cape E, before going up through the Old Port district on Commercial St. then up along the Eastern Prom.

Can you view Mapsource routes? If so, I'd love to send you what we have so far to go over for a local's perspective and sanity check.

Alright all you Chowderheads!!

I think I have found out a neat new way to give you all a sneak peak at the full, 3 day Chowder Run ride route using a zoom-able, pan-able GoogleMap output from a GPS conversion utility that I found at www.gpsvisualizer.com. The only downside is the program seems to draw straight lines between the viapoints, but at least you get a sense of where we will be riding.

Hopefully this works...

GPS files will be posted up prior to the ride, once we have finalized all routes

Experiment FAIL!! Alrighty then, I guess we'll proceed with plan B, and just hope that there are not too many changes between now and the ride.

So here are links to the complete GPS routes for the upcoming Chowder run. Included in each file are all 4 of the routes.

For Friday (York to Freeport), Saturday (Freeport to Bar Harbor) and two optional routes for Sunday (a loop around Mount Desert Island and a loop out to Schoodic point). I have also included the POI's of all of the lighthouses in New England (no we won't be visiting them all!) and a smattering of eateries and tourista sights not actually included in the routes.

GPS Ride Routes

For Garmin / Mapsource users, you should use the Garmin GPS DataBase (GDB) ver3 format: Clam_Chowder_Ride-2010.gdb

For all other GPS users you can use the GPS eXchange (GPX) format file: Clam_Chowder_Ride-2010.gpx

And for those that are totally GPS impaired Here are the turn by turn directions in pdf format for each route:

Friday-KitteryTradingPost_to_CascoBayInn.pdf

Saturday-CascoBayInn_to_BarHarbor.pdf

Sunday-ParkLoop,Cadillac Mt, MDI.pdf

Sunday-SchoodicPointLoop.pdf

I would also have provided a jpeg of the routes, but they are so darn busy they they are pretty much useless in a non-zoomable picture format.

Note: I am using Mapsource Ver 6.15.11, which I believe is the latest version downloadable from Garmin.com.
