Larry - I will be in Orlando on Sat for a few days for the NADA Convention for a few days 10th-13th - sounds like a fun ride. How did the ride go yesterday? How many guys, pictures, etc.

I posted some photos on the superbowl escape thread, next time I plan to do what the other guys do and post more of the scenery, if I can figure out how to use my .mac account to store photos there.

The ride sounds great. I'm still on the fence, with the family, might have to take the trailer to the beach! Hopefully the kids will make other plans! Would really like to come along soon though!

I hope to see you if you can make it.

Otherwise I took a ride up to the observatory since I've never been there, took the cager and didn't know how much fun we will be having. There are alot of curves, and I mean alot! There were 3 guys with Suzuki's, R1, and misc rockets that were just burning up that hill. I almost think its Southern Californias hidden gems for best road for carving. Can't wait for saturdays ride to brush up my skills on my fjr, and I will definately bring my camcorder.

Larry,

I found out from the missus that I have a prior engagement on Saturday. :haha:

Have a safe ride.

A word of caution: Mt. Palomar on weekends is heavily traveled by crotch rockets whipping around the curves so (naturally) it's heavily patroled by CHP too.

socal nice avatar? willing to trade for a day or two? <_<

Enjoy the ride Larry, have other plans...be safe and enjoy the ride.

You can easily see 50 or more bikes at the top on a weedend day. There is a guy that takes photos and sells them on his site. I don't remember the site. Palomar pics or something like that. Good shots of the carvers hanging off.

A suggestion for your ride:

Go UP the mountain by way of S6. Thats the western road. Go down the mountain by S7. That's the eastern road. Great views of Lake Henshaw. It ties back into 76. Take 76 east to 79. It's just a few miles. South on 79 for a few miles. Go right(west) on Mesa Grande Rd. Follow MG all the way back(west). Great rural road- about 11 miles long. It ends bak on 76 at The Hideout- the HD-Cruiser hangout. A great turnaround for you. Then you can head back home.

Enjoy your ride.

Ride safe.

Thanks bigdolma... I was inspired by all the Victoria's Secret catalogs my wife gets in the mail almost everyday. They're almost better than Playboy (just without the articles)!

Going to miss this one for the kids, but it sounds like a great weekday ride ( which is what I like better anyway(self employed).

Well it may look like I might be surprising all the rockets on Palomar Mtn by myself then. Keep watching for more rides with me, the next one will be next sunday.

In browsing the site, it looks like he may not be there(Palomar) anymore. LEO might have run him out of town. It's not good to encourage stupid on a public road. Check the sqids page for examples. There is usually a LEO presence on the hill, so be cool. Ride S6 going up, and you can have a lot of fun without breaking the law. Most of that section is

slow perfect radius turns that can be taken at 20-40 and still lean you over enough to drag the pegs. This is the route they built to take the telescope up the hill. I find it more fun to run up the hill than down. More gas, less brake. Get there early to beat the crowd.

Good veggie food at Mothers on top. Have fun Bro. I'll be in Julian Sunday taking Lovey to lunch at the BBQ place Dan mentioned. V-Day romancing. Remember to do Mesa Grande while you're out. On MG, look for the "15mph" turn. It's a marked right hander. Pay attention to that. You'll see several sets of skid marks running off the road and down the hill. Looks like a wild ride.

Ride safe

Too bad it wasnt later on Saturday.....My bike is still in the shop and will be done mid morning on Saturday.

What time will you be hitting the bottom of Ortega at lake Elsinore? If it is late enough, I could hook up from my side of the 15 frwy. I would be southbound from Norco.

If I leave around 9:30ish or so, I'll probably be there closer to 11am taking my time. I'll stop at the chevron station on the east side of 74 & hwy 15 for a few min, otherwise just try to meet me at the gas station at Pala Casino.

Great day to ride, and talk about technical curves! Met one other FJR at the observatory and he looked over all the gear I had on, and gave me a few tips on suspension adjustments. Unfortunately he doesn't have a computer, but testifies that the FJR is the best bike he's ever bought.

I took going up hill conservatively, and on the turn-around, a bit on the hot side going downhill. Although the rockets were taking 5min intervals screaming down the hill, I thought to myself if I could take the curves, not get caught up by the next rider, and keep up with the rider front of me, I 'd be extremely happy. So the suzuki left in front of me. I waited a short time and charged down the hill.

Using my throttle rocket and 2 finger brakes in 3rd gear was tricky, but it was the best combo keeping up with and keeping the suzuki tail lights in view. All but one of the turns got me on his tail, and I grinned looking at him in his mirrors. Hey it was my first time at palomar, and besides he had his knee pucks skidding, and my boots kept rubbing the asphalt reminding me how much I was leaning the bike. At the bottom of the hills, he gave me thumbs up, and pulled into the larger group of guys waiting to go up the hill.

Excellent place to brush up and practice curving, but the FJR is way too heavy and powerful for extreme curves in my opinion. It just good to know how much fun the sport capability my FJR has, but I'll stick to the touring for now!

We(wife) and I rode up S6 and down S7 today on our way to lunch in Julian. We were there about 10:30. About 20 bikes on the top. Up is the way I like to go on S6. You don't need the brakes. Throttle control is all you need.

As for lunch- Thanks Dan for the tip about Bailey BBQ in Julian. The combo plate is killer. 22 bucks gets you chicken, beef, pork ribs, pulled pork, and sausage with potato salad, cole slaw, and beans enough for two very hungry people. Blues bands on Saturday night. Go while you can. I saw a for sale sign on the building. We got in right at twelve when they opened. By one they were packed.

Very windy through Warner Springs. There was a speed trap on 78 east of Julian between the Banner grade and Scissor Crossing.

Ride Safe.
