118 in a 50
Damn Jeff, that one hurt just to read.

At least you weren't in Ontario. 50kms over the limit = mandatory roadside vehicle seizure / roadside 30 day suspension (min). Then, factor-in the generous 'awards'.

Just one. Day 2 on the FJR bringing her home from the out of town dealer. 118 in a 50 (Canadian speeds!) - Mandatory court appearance.

- $700 for a court agent (optional),

- $750 fine (probably a lot more without the previous)

- 7 day suspension. (see above)

- :(

Good thing I had gotten a relatively good deal on the FJR.

Before anyone one jumps all over me for my stupidity, in my defense, it was a clear sunny day on a clean, straight, secondary highway outside the city where the speed limit had been reduced from 100 to 50 (unbeknown to me, probably the week before) for pending construction work. Sheriff, who looked like he was about 12, had not yet learned how to apply logic to speed enforcement. Luckily my friend driving behind me, with my daughter in the truck, was spared the same fate as I took one for the team! :dribble:
Jesus, that's expensive. I don't think I will be speeding in Canukland any time soon.

Having one of these
minibadge1.jpg
has saved my ass several times
I am thinking of getting a clergy sticker for the bike and a clergy collar to wear, and little crucifix to glue somewhere on the bike. I read somewhere that cops seldom ticket clergy. I wonder if Officer Neckvein would buy it.

I managed to pick up 4 points in.......... Alberta last year.

I also got one in South Dakota last year picking up I believe the performance award award at CFR last year.

By the way you really have to try hard to get a ticket in South Dakota, The cop was nice enough and knock it down by $200 to $125 with my "had to catch up with the wife story".

A couple of weeks ago I got my first citation on the FJR. Was headed to work, running late from having gone to pick up a new bulb for my PIAA's. Got on the interstate and let'er rip. Let's just say, I wasn't being a very good ambassador for cycling, I was weaving and darting, enjoying the FJR's accleration ability etc... Anyway, a mile or two later, just as I made my move to the connector exit ramp I glanced in the rear view and there he was, dash lights flashing in the unmarked Tahoe. I put on my blinker and immediately pulled to the side.

I began removing my helmet and gloves as he walked up. When he got up beside the bike I saw that he was a white guy in his mid 30's, State Trooper. I spoke first and said, "Well, I guess I was speeding a little". He kinda chuckled and said with a smile, "Yep, that among other things". I gave him an obligatory smile and little laugh. He asked for my license and insurance. Turns out, my insurance card had recently expired. He told me wait there while he ran my license check.

When he came back he told me he had written me a ticket for "the lesser of all evils". He had cited me for changing lanes without a signal, gave me a waring for speeding and didn't cite me at all for lack of proof of insurance. I asked him how fast I was going and he said 85. I was relieved actually as I know it was 90+ at times. In what could have totaled up to close to a grand, turned out as a minor violation with a $153 fine. I apologized and thanked him for giving me a break, and also for his thankless service to us all.

I applied to go to Defensive Driving class, took that last week and that will keep the points off my record. So, for now - one ticket for failure to signal and zero points.

Bottom line, be polite, don't make any sudden moves and prepare to take your medicine. :)

Got one going 92 on the freeway back in October I think. In my defense I was going 92 on the freeway. Had to go to level 2 traffic school (I did not know there was such a thing) because of some prior incidents in the car.
Don't know how you didn't get off, John. That's an air tight defense.

I did ask him if he would let me go. You can guess what he said.

Oct. 2003 on the Yarnell Grade outside of Wickenburg, AZ. On my 02' CBR600F4i followed by a friend on his 954RR. Purposely went up the 45 mph speed limit hill (which could easily be ridden well over 100 as is often done by squids) due to heightened enforcement. Never pushed over the 50 mark on the speedo thinking we'd be fine and got pulled over at the top by Dudley Do-Right and his older and much wiser partner. They were using VASCAR so a detector wouldn't have helped. https://www.vascar.com/ Dudley walked up and asked the standard "know why we stopped you?" line and asked me if I knew what the speed limit was, to I replied yes, 45. He asked me to guess how fast he clocked me at and I said I know I was very close to 45 considering speedo error. He practically yelled "51!" like I was public enemy #1. I'm being very respectful as was my riding buddy, but I had the bad cop and he had the good one. Dudley took lic, reg, and disappeared for about 5 mins while my buddy and the gray haired DPS officer yukked it up after he realized that we were both EMS pilots and had been on scenes lately that he had worked. I thought COOL, now we'll just get a wave off as Harley riders were hauling around the last corner only to slow when seeing the cruiser lights, so we figured they'd be the ticket recipients. Not to be, we both got warning tickets for the 6 over that I know we never did, but at least no revenue exchanged hands. No tix (yet) on the FJR, but I guess I'm due. Last actual moving violation was speeding on Pismo beach in 1976 at 2Am with two girls and a case of beer, but that's another story. :D

I think I worked it out once that I average one speeding ticket every two years. I am 55 now and I started driving at 16. You do the math.

The only real good side to it all is I always seem to get tagged when I am not really fully aware I am in fact "speeding"... meaning that I get tickets for doing 45 in in a 30 or 82 in 65 mph posted zone.............but not 5 minutes earlier when I was doing 75 in the 30 or 132 in the 65. For this I consider myself lucky.

So to answer the question, in the 4 years I have owned my FJR I have gotten only two performance awards, and both were reasonable fines. I did get stopped on a third occasion but the cop let me go with a warning.

In 1972 I was driving a 911 S down a road marked 30mph at close to 130, but slowed down consderably to make a right turn at a 4 way. ...rear tires screaming and fighting some oversteer coming out of the turn...... I got clocked doing 42 in the 30 mile zone by a cop past well past the intersection who did not only miss me running the stop sign but my 3 digit approach .......... and had no idea why I was laughing as he wrote the ticket for the 12 mph infraction. ;)

Note to self, do NOT defect to Canada.

1.) Kaneohe, HI, 2000, Kawa ZX-6R. Cited for 60 in a 45. Cop was in an unmarked, green, Ford Explorer with out any kind of speed sensing equipment. He ran up on my friend and I as we entered the highway. Spooked my buddy and he went by me with cop in tow. We had to stop and the gate to the base and the cop gave both of us a ticket based on the follow behind method. Fought it and won.

2.) Aiea, Hi, 2003, Yam R1. Pulled over for having my license plate mounted on the swingarm. I didn't have a license and got away with a very convincing story about how two other states had misprinted previous licenses and asked him to check the system just to make sure. Told me to go home and park the bike until I could get my license straightened out.

3.) Pearl City, HI, 2003, Yam R1. Pulled over trying to make the yellow light on one wheel, still no license. Friendly local Sheriff Dep. who liked bikes. He told me about a good road not to far from where we were to practice being a hooligan and liked the custom paint by the guy who painted his brother's bike. When I asked if my roommate could come get my bike so his tow guy wouldn't eff up the paint he let me go. :yahoo:

BTW, got license the next week.

3 stops, 1 ticket, no fines.

Are the LEO's able to see all your previous warnings on their computer when they pull you over? Several years ago, I had been stopped maybe 3 times in one year in Washington State on my BMW K1200LT and had gotten off with only warnings for speeding. The fourth time, Officer Neckvein ticketed me for a paltry 10 over on deserted highway in perfect weather. So I have always wondered, did he see that I had been warned several times before and decided, "Not this time, buddy"? And, are State Troopers able to see your record of warnings by say the county sheriffs department?

State Patrol pulled me over in my new Caddy ,, he said , "you went pass me at 72 mph and didn't even slow down" ( in a 65 zone).

(I thought,, well at least the speedo is right..)

He continued, "you would think that a big expensive car like this would have a cruise control on it !"

( so he was pissed because I was driving a shiny new car and didn't slow down when I saw him)

He let me go with a warning ,, but said the warning stayed in the computer for 6 months ....

,, My son-in-law / police officer was in the car with me .. After we were back on our way he said the 6 month computer thing

was ********.. So was a 7 mph over traffic stop....

( thank goodness the son-in-law didn't call ******** when the officer was there ,, I probably would have gotten a ticket..)

I was playing hooligan in northern Cali with my then 1 year old FJR showing a couple sport-bikes I could keep up. Then we slowed when traffic came up and merged in. Cops pulled the three bikes over and none of the cars we were going along in traffic with. Cop apologized but said he had to pull over what the spotter in the plane told him to. Pisses me off to this day.

Last year just as my one ticket from Old Michael country was expiring, I got one in my F150 in a speed trap on the Oregon coast -- no other description is possible other than a revenue collection point; with a speed change from 45 to 25 faster than I could slow down. He sited me one for 35 in a 25 for not slowing fast enough.

Two months later at WFO in Moscow Idaho, I stupidly saw an FJR ahead and wanted to ride into town with company. The cop legitimately pulled me over and tells me he was going to pull the other guy over until I came over the rise. Later I saw the bike and it was HotRodZilla... it really hurt when he laughed at me in the parking lot at WFO. My feelings are still hurt. ;)

Am I the only guy that gets pissed off that cops get freebies just because they have a badge?

Now I have to ride like a paw-paw so I don't get 3 in 12 months or bad things really happen. Oregon does suck as far as rural highway speeds... some of the lowest in the Nation per CNN the other night.

I feel better now. :D

Yikes. Shiny! That's an unenviable string of misfortune.

You'll have to give MM2 and me some education on THAT at WFO -- or LEAD up the coast on the way to WCR. (As long as you aren't using a catheter.) ;)

Doubt you're the only one, but it doesn't really bother me. They're also pretty much the only ones who risk getting shot during traffic stops, too.

Yeah -- WTF is up with that?? And next door in Idaho, a lot of their rural 2 lane roads are 75 mph, even in areas where that's really pushing it (and I'm NOT the type to complain about a posted speed limit being too high).

I actually only have 1... yes i said 1 it was on the way to Laughlin January 2009 (i think) he wrote me up for 75 in a 55, he also wrote on the ticket in brackets (106) and told me that was so he would remember if I decided to contest it.

He also said that the first number on the radar was 135 but he was not sure if it was me or the guy chasing me......and i was not going to enlighten him.

It was on Route 66 20 miles from Nevada border and i got to do traffic school and pay a $312 fine.

Now, THAT's a good cop. He already knows that you browned your shorts getting pulled over -- the deterrent effect was accomplished without a 100+mph award. Then he made sure that he saved the court and taxpayers some time and money with the notation and comment. Bet you didn't mind paying that fine or doing that well earned day in class.

And then there's the occasional type like the prick CHP who cited BBIII after his get-off in November '06 with an attitude and bias against anyone who rode a motorcycle (not just a hunch, but what he said and a few other actions he didn't need to take) -- those of us there were wondering if his wife had run off with a motorcyclist.

In the 12 years I've been driving and riding, I've been lucky on the bikes I've had... less so in my cars. I used to get pulled over all the time for either blatantly breaking the law or just stupid stuff cause the cops wanted to check me out.

Got pulled over on my CB250 because a cop thought I was 'racing' a pickup next to me. I didn't even know the truck was there! That Nighthawk thing can't race anything! He let me go, was only doing 50 in a 45.

Same bike, 45 in a 35 and got let go, said I was too busy concentrating on riding in the fog to look at my speedo.

Got pulled over twice on my Bandit 1200 for doing wheelies, once with a passenger. Got let go each time after a firm talking to. My buddy and I also got nailed and ticketed though on the highway together. Got nailed doing 90 in a 65 and he wrote it for 78 in a 65. Had to pay that one.

Have been pulled over twice on the FJR. Once was last spring doing 78 in a 65, told him I honestly wasn't paying attention and that I'm used to following traffic but the big highway bridge was empty so it was my mistake. He bought it and thanked me for being honest and let me go.

2nd time on the FJR was last summer after arriving here in TX, got pulled over doing 75 in a 70 (I know, seriously?), by an old state trooper coming the opposite way and he did a 180 to get me. He was cool and he just wanted to know what I did in the Air Force and let me go.

Oh, almost forgot I got charged with speeding and careless driving for crashing my Sabre. Went to court got the speeding dismissed and the careless reduced to inattentive driving. Insult to injury, I still hate the cops in the city. They charged me based on the accounts of a neighbor saying they 'heard something going really fast'. yeah... i was.

I honestly lost count of how many times I've been pulled over in my cars, but it's easily into the 50s. For just about everything except a DUI. Pretty clean record though, have had probably about 6-7 speeding tickets total, but have been pretty good for the last 4 years.
