"I'll say one thing, if Ray can ever get this engine back together, I'm fullly impressed...."

Amen Brother.

That engine needed some horse power just to drive all those darn chains.
Me too! Cool to see the indside of one of those.

Not timing chain. The timing chain is between #3 and #4, and would not be at the end of a shaft. under a cap on the side of the engine. There's be a lot of camshaft or crankshaft sticking out of that hole if it were the timing chain.

Water or oil pump drive..... could be. Don't know how those are built there.

It is for sure the timing chain and is totaly seperate from the cam chain. It lives in a seperate part of the cylinder casting and it drives a shaft that is horizontal to the crankshaft and behind the cylinders. On the right end is where the timing assy. lives and inside the casting is a set of bevel gears that drive the water pump on the foward side of the cylinders. If you study the pictures it will become clear

Now see, I've always used the term "timing chain" to refer to the chain that drives the cams, which this is not. So it drives something used by the ignition system to time spark?

What does "horizontal to the crankshaft" mean? Parallel? Perpendicular?

I'm looking at the picture in post #89 where I find two ginormous drive chains linking crankshaft to another shaft, then to the clutch. That intermediate shaft drives the cam chain (which to me is a timing chain) and the smaller chain, which I still have no understanding of at all.

Not trying to be argumentative or difficult, I just don't see what it does, and while it may be semantics, to me a cam chain is a timing chain. You takes your 240z down to the shop and says, "My timing chain is getting slack, no more adjustment available, I need a new one." Ya know what the timing chain does? It drives the camshaft! Thus my confusion at calling something which is clearly not a cam chain a timing chain. If you follow what I'm not saying very well.

Poor choice of words on my part. Parallel is more better. there is an ignition advanve and pick up coil assy driven by a plastic gear on the oposite end of the shaft. In the middle of the shaft is the set of bevel gears that run the water pump. I hope to have a bunch more pictures tomorow with the cases split to show three more chains doing stuff.

Holy cow...I could definitely get that sumbitch apart, but getting it back together would take some serious help. Good thing Ray is a professional.

Keep them coming. This is cool to watch.

I edited whilst you typed, maybe my question is better phrased now.
Attempting to clear things up. In the picture you see in post #89 it shows the cam chain in the center and it only drives the cams so I guess it is a timing chain. The small chain to the left in the picture drives the shaft that controls engine ignition timing and drives the water pump through bevel gears so that chain is also a timing chain. If you go through all the pictures it will begin to make some sense maybe. It is a strange way to build an engine.

I am building a new engine mounting fixture this morning so I can get it into the warm part of my shop. Hope to have it moved and the cases split today unless UPS brings me gun parts. It would be good to get the gun back together before it mates with the KZ. I would end up with a Brazilian gun that eats Sushi.

Great thread - keep going Dcarver. Looking forward to updates as you progress.

If I had a CBX I'd want to give it a square headlight and fly screen off a nighthawk 700
+1 to this. And find a chin fairing for it as well. This was my bike some time ago. I have few regrets in life, but 1 of them is definitely selling this bike.

Just sent Don a bunch more autopsy pictures so he will be along. It looks really good inside but it sure is complicated.

I regret getting rid of my Nighthawk 700S too. I keep looking half-heartedly for a decent one and the wife even thinks there's room in the garage for one too...

Sorry for the thread hijack! I'm following along and wondering how the hell all the parts will go back together without any left over!!
