Since I haven't rode with most of you yet, I would like to know what your medium, medium-fast stand for. I generally ride 5-10 above in the corners I will add another 10 or so by the time I am done with it.
I guess its hard to say...as it depends on what the recommended speed for that curve was. I would put your riding style of 20mph over in the medium category....if you typically just maintained 5-10 through the curve though I would have to say that it would be more of an easy going - sightseeing pace as opposed to a medium. ( I think I just made up a new category)

Now to everyone reading this post - not just to cougar...

Its gonna be pretty hard to peg where people fit as many most on this ride will not have ridden with each other before. Therefore, everybody give space and respect each other's space on this ride...wave on and allow faster riders through and drop back if others ahead seem to be pulling away. BY NO MEANS try to "keep up". That is a big NO-NO. If you are riding faster than you normally do , and everything seems to be "happening fast and in a blur" as opposed to feeling controlled - that may be a sign that you are riding above your limits. I've parroted this line over and over in this thread - so consider yourself warned.

Everybody attending must take personal responsibility for their own behaviour to make this a fun, happy and safe day for all attending.

Please note that, for me atleast, I will not have ridden twisties probably until just previous to this ride. Therefore, I won't be in midseason form by any means...therefore I intend to start off a little easier at the beginning until my skills catch up. I presume that there will be a few people in the same boat as me. I will probably be leading a medium/fast group with others leading the fast group(s), medium group(s) and easy going - sightseeing group.

Mark, I meant to say that I do 5-10 over on a straight line and add another 10 or so by the time I am done with the corner. I tend to increase through the corner. Speed also depends on the over all traffic flow. But what ever he case is I am done supporting police departments by having them issue me a performance awards. So, if it is a slow group then let it be.

Maybe I misunderstood, I too typically tend to ride at a plus 10 or thereabouts pace on the straights. Occasionally I will wick it up for a short burst or obviously to pass, but that is my typical pace on the straights. I was talking mainly of the corners...

There won't be alot of straight roads on this Ramble. :)

Absolutely. I bet most of us will be somewhat tentative. I'm going to think of it as a skills-building day and as a good day to just get out for a scenic ride.

The more we talk about it the more I am looking forward to this ride. And, with all of the discussion about speed and technique, this ride has the potential to be one of the most conscientious and safe group rides that I've ever participated in. My guess is that, during the breaks, many of us will not be hesitant to discuss our early-season mistakes and deficiencies!

Im looking forward to[TEARING UP] the roads on this ride. And to demonstrate my unbelieveable riding skills to everone in the' sight seeing group' and I mean it. No holds barred. I'm plan'n on even shift'n it into 3rd. gear.............

Thats if its really straight, I mean!!!

Having done a few track days on my FJR, I can tell you that 3rd gear will get you a ways over 100 mph. You will indeed be "tearing up" the road. :yahoo: Just be safe about it and all will be well.

I didn't see a smiley in your post to indicate sarcasm...and I presume this was ALL in jest...so here's your smiley...

Come on guys!!!! I've got 2 ft. of snow in my drive, let me have a little fun today OK. Hey!! If you think my riding skills are really something, check this out for my math............ March has 22 more days left, and April has 18 to the big day, Now let me see 22 and 18 is.........................Hmmmm!!!!!!! Way to many!!!! Come on Spring.

Regarding how fast is fast, I would consider myself going very fast, in top form, if I was taking the curves at twice what the yellow sign says. So, I guess that makes medium at about 150% of the yellow sign and slow would be, um, slower than that. Most of the time I ride in the medium category, but a lot depends on the road conditions, sight distance, and other traffic and I don't spend much time looking at the speedometer.

So just an interesting tidbit. I spoke with a girl I work with today and got an idea. I'm going to scout the route and have her placed in strategic locations to take photos of everyone as they approach, pass thru, and exit a turn. Just something I thought might be fun and a neat souvenier for those of you coming from a ways away. I haven't quite got it figured out just where I am going to have her be, but I am thinking since we will be in the Marietta area, maybe we could make a stop somewhere for a group shot, or if we go to Big Muskie, she could meet us there for a group shot. Anyhow, just an idea I had. I've always wanted some good action shots of me on the FJR, and this would be my chance.

Let me just add here, that she is a photographer on the side and shoots weddings, senior pics, blah blah blah. So these won't be just some little shot. They will be a high quality pic.

Sounds like a great idea. I'd like to have a pic of me and my FJR and would be willing to pay for it. Lets hope for good weather.

For this event, only shots "on the fly" would be okay...no stops during the route for a big group shot.

No big group shot unless it is at the beginning at Athens (and she is there and all setup early - otherwise no go)...or smaller group shots as people come and go at lunch or one of the rest stops. So long as none of the groups are held up by any photo shoots - I'm okay with it. It's already gonna be a full day as it is. :yahoo:

Just a suggestion...on the east end we are doing two loops of some pretty twisty roads...she oughta be able to get a shot or two in there somewhere. ;)

I'm also hoping that individual riders will bring their digital cameras to take shots of the day to share the event with the Forum. :clapping:

Tell your friend she is welcome under those circumstances...I hope she has fun and gets some great shots.

The digital camera thing works for me. Some of the best shots I've captured were when everybody is just hangin out. I know my buddy Dave with the ST has movie capablies on his bike, and I'm sure he will have his camera mounted for the weekend. As for me I wouldn't mind a couple Professional shots of me on the FJR, like OhioFJR posted a couple posts back. No different than "Kill-boy" except local.

Come on Spring!!!!!!!

I'm still on the 'Possible' list, move me over to Participant. :yahoo: Definitely coming out for the weekend.

I thought I already made a hotel reservation but I couldn't find any confirmation. I'll look into that next week.

Thanks.

Brian

I only added the group shot as a suggestion, but you're right Wheatie. It will be a ful day already, so it's cool :) I just asked her about it yesterday so we will prolly discuss it further in the coming weeks. But I'll try to let people know where she wil be at so no one sees a young womn on the side of the road and tries to pull off and help her.

Okay. Although I expect everybody to have a tankbag map (or gps) AND be familiar with the route you will be taking on Saturday, I will be providing a turn direction sheet for those that want them.

Now here's where you gotta be paying attention... :clapping:

...if you want a turn direction sheet, you gotta PM me . Do not post in this thread...it's getting long enough as it is. I will not be scanning through this thread for your responses...so don't. PM it is. :clapping:

If you don't PM me, I will assume you don't want one or have a gps and don't need one. If you have a GPS...post #1 has enough info in it for you to route your own GPS.

I will be revising the route through Marietta this weekend based on thompsonian's comment.

EDIT: I will update post#1 and put TD next to your name if you asked for turn directions.

EDIT#2: I will bring turn directions with me and hand them out Saturday morning. Study the route in post #1 in the meantime.

EDIT#3 : GPS'ers can construct their route by looking in post #1 for the the route.

be careful with that. if she's readily visible, you might get into issues of target fixation. and i'm not talking because we see some chick on the side of the road and get googly. i just mean we're entering a corner, and a minor distraction can lead to issues. i've pretty much gotten used to the 3 different businesses that set up shop down at deals gap, but every once in a while on other rally rides there will be someone pulled over taking pics of their friend, and i could see where it would be a problem. when i've taken pics of buddies during rides, it's been during a stop and i'd tell them i'm going ahead to set up, so at least they know it's coming.

i'd like to think that simply because we're on fjr's means we're a bit more skilled, more mature, and less prone to rookie mistakes, but i thought i'd at least post my opinion as a heads up.
