I'm utterly impressed with your logic and intelligence. Your opening post was a perfect tee-up for people to reply so that you could make your statement. Well done. Save a step, and next time, just type up all the rebuttals to the responses you plan on getting.

Idea.....In early August, take a well-deserved vacation and ride to western South Dakota, and relate your well-thought-out, logical, lucid opinions as to why people buy Hardly Ablesons to any motorcyclists you meet. Spirited discourse may follow, which you obviously enjoy. Keep us posted.

(Just ride. Most of you already know that.)

" I said a bagger falls very short when the normal criterion (i.e. acceleration, handling, braking etc) are applied to it. Does that constitute a dismissal? Has no one else wondered why a machine that rates so poorly in the normal ways to judge a bike does so well and has survived, for so long?"

Again, you see, that's apparently your opinion and the problem is it's wrong. Rate poorly? By who? Your whole query here is based on a misconception, thus it is without merit. Harley's are NOT bad motorcycles. You believe they are and thus can't fathom their existence. People can believe what they want, but that doesn't make it true.

Ever ride a Ural?

LOL

I once had a Ural infection...doc fixed me up though.

Harley's are NOT bad motorcycles.
I agree with that. I just think they are crazy overpriced.

I bought my first FJR from a Harley dealer <gasp>. They were quite nice to me and very glad to get rid of the non-Harley hidden in the back room.

They didn't even blink at my low ball offer.

OK, well, if this is going to get ugly I will drop out of it.
Really? Seriously? Please tell us all exactly what you expected to sow from the gibberish you typed in your Opening Post? Do you truly expect us to believe that you never expected any "ugly"? You tried to convince us that you were complex and intelligent but you act like you are confused when this...topic takes a sour turn. You type negativity then complain when you get negativity. I find a lack of sincerity and a surplus of self righteous arrogance along with prose that would fit nicely in a chapter of Alice in Wonderland.

The real question is why did so many of us waste our time responding to this cluster f*** of a thread.
If what you say is correct why is it that you are the only one to react in a negative manner?

Maybe it's not me, or my "prose." Maybe it's YOU, and the fact you are an ugly person. Everything above is your perception. Perceptions are, in large part, choices. Your choices identify you, so very quickly!

YOU are all over the web - all over the world. The spoiler. Everyone was having fun, 'till you showed up. But now the fun stops, because we have to deal with YOU.

Go back to the dank, dark hell that must be your "life." Take your misery, and your bile with you.
This is actually getting to be fun. Your math is not adding up properly. You have received numerous negative responses besides mine and you complained about those responses yet suddenly you say I am "the only one". Either you are too stupid to remember those other posts or you are too dishonest to admit you are not getting the support you want. The more you type, the smarter I feel.

I am very well aware that what we type here is all over the world, all over the web. That's why I strongly believe that on these forums honesty and accuracy are of great importance. Folks who will never join this forum will do a Google search for information on how to maintain, repair and operate their FJRs. I believe we have a responsibility to provide that information as accurately as possible. I don't think those folks would get much use out of this topic or anything you have typed so far.

Your lack of honesty is completely evident just in the first sentence of the quote in this post. You said if it got ugly you would drop out. It has gotten ugly. Do the Right Thing.

Do carry on. You are definitely winning the hearts and minds.

Some of their bigger bikes are definitely $$$$$. However they do sell a 500 for under 7 grand, their 750 is just under $8,000, which makes it very competitive with say a Bonnville and a few other bikes. The Sportster is around $9,000.

What's the price on the FJR now? $16,000 something. There's quite a few HD models below that.

I am guessing their pricing is based on weight ;)

Harley prices:

I'm not trying to defend Harley here, just trying to present the facts. :)

I'm giving this 'til the end of the day waiting to hear it's been one big elaborate April Fool's joke.

Knife, I was comparing prices of similar motorcycles - touring types specifically. Yamaha gives pretty decent discounts off list price. Harley's didn't used to around here anyway. Maybe they do now that sales are slipping.

A friend just bought a brand new 0 miles Heritage with the 114 motor and all the goodies for 19k. I rode it yesterday and while it doesn't have FJR performance it is no slouch and the handling and brakes are pretty damn good. The new monoshock suspension is nice. Doesn't take much farkling to get 19k into an FJR and either one will take you wherever you want to go in comfort.

I don't know that anybody builds a bad bike these days so the bashing is mostly small minds trying to make their point.

I even got a t shirt out of the deal so now I own two pieces of Harley clothing. I just need to know the secret handshake and I'm in the club.

I already have the loud pipes.

I don't bother with saving them I just put them out of their misery.

The bike price is not my problem....I just can't afford the thou$ands required for the wardrobe....HD socks, HD undies, HD pants, HD shirts, HD jackets, HD vests, HD bandannas, HD caps, HD gloves, HD helmets, etc.

You get the point. LOL

The Harley Davidson phenomenon is... well, it is, and why is the subject of this thread.
Many things are to be considered. First is what I call momentum/consensus reality. Example: The Canadian border. All the way across a huge continent there is, quite literally, nothing. But people believe there is something there and that, on the other side of it, there is another country. That belief is the only reason there is a Canada, today (or a USA, if you're on the north side of it) - i.e. because there was a border yesterday and because people continue to believe there is one, today.

Then there is... the "bad boy" game. Little girls with weak minds and strong hormones swoon over a bad boy. They try soooo hard to change him, giving him all the (!) in the world in the process. Often I have considered writing a book entitled "enjoying stupidity."

Then there is... fantasy land, where being a 1%er biker is like being a rock star and the life that goes with it is one, giant and never-ending orgasm... The reality, of course, is a desperate, criminal and depraved existence where you are controlled by your gang and spend a lot, if not most of your life in prison. Kind of like a lottery ticket - promoting dreams of being rich while the reality is, you're out $2.

Then there is... status symbol land, where we prove we have $30,000 we can use to impress others. I don't know who... But the NEW Harley certainly is your ticket to places you can't go, without one, and the people you meet, in those places. Kind of like a rolling country club...

I could go on. But I started this thread to hear YOUR ideas, not to air mine!

Harleys... are they really motorcycles? If so they are, hands down, the sorriest of bikes. Does anyone remember AMF? Still, they survive, and continue. Why?
Sounds like your girl dumped you for a bad boy , 1%r with lotsa money and gave him all of her (!) ...

Sorry for your luck my man..

Bikes are cool , love my road glide ultra , liked my fjr too but I got a little tired of vanilla..

Liked the Connie better but disliked the idea of possible jail time during my commute to work because I can’t keep it out of triple digits...

Touring and commuting on an ultra with stock pipes and full gear on is like a stealth bomber , cops don’t even look twice when you ease by at 85...

I keep the old ZX12r (which I’ve done 4 iron buts on ) and a 955i around for blacktop road crime days and a EXC F 350 for woods duties...

If you haven’t ridden a modern ultra you are missing out , especially if you tour 2 up.. PTT coms , real cruise control , cargo capacity and comfort like you don’t know... you don’t even have to spend a grand on a Russell seat so you can ride it over 300 miles ...

And maybe Barbra Streisand and Alec Baldwin will be leaving for Canada soon. Sorry if my post is inane, off topic and political. Maybe it will get this thread closed. Hoping.

Beginning to be fun, for you. Getting booring, for me. Funny how that works :)

I have no need to be right and making you wrong has no value, to me. My ego does not rule me. I know how to do many things, not just fight. I have nothing left to prove and, more importantly, no one left, to whom I need to prove it. It's called maturity.

After maturity is attained, looking back, you realize there never was anyone to whom you needed to prove anything because THEY DIDN'T GIVE A DAMN. They still don't...

The fact that this thread has lasted 5 pages without the guillotine is absolute proof that the only thing consistent is life is that things can and do change. Somehow, I feel good about that....
...the only relevant fact here is that the OP posted in OFF TOPIC DISCUSSIONS...meaning, totally optional to peruse this thread, and thin skinned people should really just stay the hell out, because it will probably not end well for snowflake, fragile egos.

That is all.

I find that hurtful. You have hurt my tender feelings. Is there no Safe Zone on this forum?

I am really starting to Feel this thread now. I mean I am really getting the vibes, entering the energy vortex, I am truly understanding the duality of man, I am feeling the Aura of El Guapo Loco. I am surrounded by aromatherapy candles, sipping some herbal tea, and even considering becoming a vegetarian. Later I may sip some Pinot Grigio and put some chrome polish on my FJR's exhaust.

Let's not lose focus on the greatness of Just Being. Everything is...Everything. I can feel myself getting centered, my inhibitions are loosening, El Guapo Loco has helped to free me from my ugliness, he has liberated me from the chains of mediocrity, El Guapo Loco is a Hero and none of you have the understanding, the depth, or the wisdom to understand his Greatness.

I sort of want to share this thread with my Harley riding cousin. I thought about sharing it with my Harley riding friends at work. I figure I have something over 15K miles of trips around this country when there was at least one Harley in the group. Never had a mechanical issue that was not created by the owner or the mechanic. The bikes have been just as reliable as my FJR or my ST1300 and usually more comfortable. Yeah the Harleys are slower but they will easily do the legal speed limit anywhere in America and they never slowed me down when traveling. I don't own one now but I can easily see having one at some point. Probably not as my primary bike, but still in the stable.

Maybe if I had a Harley I would be cool like El Guapo Loco.

It must have really been slow at work today, JSNS
