Took it out to try the new race tech gold valves with springs up front and rebuilt OEM shock. After a few tweaks to the initial settup all is great.
So, when Race Tech rebuilds a stock FJR shock, I know that they re-spring it, and drill it and install a valve for recharging the nitrogen. I assume they also revalve the damping for the stiffer spring too? Does it then have a single weight spring (IOW lose the Hard/Soft remote)? And what about adjustments? I assume that you would retain the rebound (some say it is both rebound and compression) adjuster on the bottom? Any other adjustability added? And finally, how much did all of that cost (just for the shock, not the forks)?

Fred,

RaceTech parts went in the front end.

Jeff @ Motorsports Plus did the rear shock. He mentioned that he drills through the body (the location is out of sight at the top end when mounted) to release the existing nitrogen charge and to initially drain the oil, did some additional machining (for taking apart and reassembly I believe), revalved it, and added a schrader valve for filling and recharging. The Hard/Soft remote is still intact as are the other stock features by what I was told. No other adjustments were added unless you consider the ability to change the oil volumne and nitrogen pressure. It was enough less on the price to give it a try rather than paying for a Penskie or Ohlin. you have a PM regarding the price I paid as that is up to the vendor to determine and may vary depending on what is needed.

Hey Gary...Get yourself a rear facing camera. Then that other dork won't be all alone. You know you want to...
Hey Z,

Now there's something I never thought of. I could get a rear facing camera. I could point it right at my face: then I could look into the monitor and watch myself having a good time. I can have twice as much fun riding my FJR. Now think about it, doesn't that beat paying twice as much for a new one?

House was here.

The word "eviscerate" comes to mind when I look at those bar ends....

Ouch! Could get ugly if you fly over the bars in a get off eh?

Hey SoCal,

Na, I keep them fairly loose, they rotate easily with just a a light push. Plus, with a scrawny 6mm bolt holding it on, they'd just snap off during a collision even if they COULDN'T ROTATE. Nothing to worry about. I've ridden with them for years on my mountain bike, and during each "get off", they just bend out of the way. As a matter of fact, they were always the first thing I straightened when I got back on the bike. Anyway, I just love them.

Day before Yesterday installed G-2 ...Yesterday installed 2 Brothers Titanium exhaust...Today I listened to the heavenly music while my neighbor rode my bike up and down the road...May install footpeg lowering blocks later today....Can't ride until foot heals up some more....Torture worse than waterboarding.....<img title=":(" class="bbc_emoticon" src="https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//public/style_emoticons/default/sad.png" data-cke-saved-src="https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//public/style_emoticons/default/sad.png" />

Dang! Been thinking about Two Brothers and thought you had included sound clips.

I'm a little afraid about them being too loud. I had a Two Brother on my FZ1 and although it sounded amazing it would have been louder than I prefer for the FJR.

Was talking with one of my biker buds after work today. He was asking about the bar ends. I was explaining that at this point, they're just an experiment. But I sure do like 'em so far. So there ya go. If nothing more, ya gotta admit, it is DIFFERENT.

Gary - Call me wacky, but.... I would not want to ride with those things on the bars. In an accident that will disembowel you rather quickly. Just sayin'.

Installed my Kriss modulator from my old Burgman, bit of Fun finding the best place for the control unit, was hoping not to remove all 4 dash panels, but the left side had more room.

I don't expect that anybody would have an interest in something like this. This is something that i - alone - wanted to try. I appreciate your concerns and I hear what cher sayin'. I'm just checking them out to see what I think right now. As I said, they rotate easily out of the way with just the flick of the wrist. I've used them on my mountain bike for years and I've had a bunch of crashes on that thing. I set em loose on the mountain bike for the same reason... they simply rotate out of the way during a crash. They've been crash tested many times and I know what they'll do. However, I drive my mountain bike like a maniac. Not so with the FJR. For what it's worth, I don't drive like most guys. I obey the speed limits and honestly, I drive like gramma most of the time. I've never been involved in an accident in my life, in my car or on the bike... and I don't plan on it. I say my prayers before I get onboard and I believe that my safety is not an accident... if that makes sense. So, Bluesman, all that said, I'm the one that should be saying, "Call me wacky." And I'll be just fine.

For the moment, the jury's still out on whether or not I'll keep em. Tomorrow's the first day I'll be trying them out on the slab.

Why does everyone keep saying, "Oh...Those are gonna disembowel/kill/maim you?"

How the Hell do ANY of you know that? Have you ever seen it happen? What about all the miscellaneous bullshit we put on these bikes, like Radar detectors, GPS mounts, SPOT Trackers, cameras, etc...None of those will kill you, but some stupid aluminum, capped bar ends will poke your eye out.

Nevermind if you're in a crash that violent, the sudden interaction with the pavement my finish you off, but those nasty bar ends will make you suffer first.

We oughta have a rule that if you don't know what you're talking about, you can't say it. Of course, that would end 90% of the chatter on the internet.

He explained why they won't maim you, becasue they move real easy, if they didn't though they could act like a hook and yeah, maim you pretty bad. and all that other stuff you mentioned isn't shaped like a hook of sorts.

Question though....if they move real easy how can you use them to steer the bike? That would be like the regular handgrips moving if you put to much pressure on them. Couldn't that cause you to lose control if they move easy?

My bags were getting a little faded (some sun, some age), and I had previously tried this product on my Olds Bravada (which had lasted six months so far and still looks good), so I gave it a whirl: pre-treatment left, post treatment right.

Nobody knows, but that doesn't mean you can't anticipate a potential problem if you have half a brain in your head.

And actually, this (safety) discussion does come up on just about any accessory or mod. How many times have we heard that you should not replace the windshield plastic screws with metal ones as you'll be decapitated when it doesn't break away? Do we have any examples of that to point to? Do we really need any to know that it is a sound idea?

Look back in the early discussions about the Ram-bone (when Dave was deciding how long/tall they would be) and there was talk by some nay-sayers about it ripping your balls off in a get off. That's why it only comes in the 5" height it does, it doesn't stick up any higher than the tank does.

Myself, I would not want a dash shelf for that very same reason. It's also why I use the RAM ball mounting system for all of my added junk instead of some more solid mounting system, because that stuff will all pivot out of the way if/when struck. You'll also never see a set of highway pegs on any of my bikes either, all for safety concerns.

But none of that stuff sticks out as a hook shaped pipe ready to gore you. When used (as intended) on bicycles (which do noit go 150mph) the hooks are aimed away from you, so they would not hook your gut when you fly by in a get off. But, Mountain Bikers that ride in the woods eschew those things as they have a bad habit of hooking on trees and branches and toss you on your fat ass faster than you can blink. (yes I do have first hand experience with that) If they will grab trees and throw you down how big of a stretch of the imagination is it that they might grab you on the way by?

Everyone makes their own decisions on what they deem an acceptable risk for the potential reward of any accessory.

Uhh, that would be rule #11. And it would effectively prevent me from ever being able to post anything at all...

Yeah, with that rule change we'd just have to shut the whole forum right down. ;)

Since we are already in NEPRT...

Concerning Garyahouse's bar ends: I always enjoy Gary's posts and his threads. He seems like a really nice guy and normally I have nothing bad to say about the man.

But NOW... I think Gary is misleading us on this. He keeps saying how he got this idea from his Mountain Bike. He says he rides his Mountain Bike a lot. Well, I have been to Florida and I can tell you for sure there ARE NO MOUNTAINS in Florida. I think Gary is playing with us. I just don't understand his motives yet.

In all honesty, those things do not look that safe to me but I am not going to criticize the man. I hope he never has to prove their safety in a crash.
