No joke ^^^^ I'm so effin tired of either cold or wet or both, I'm ready for winter to be done!
--G
I am so done with winter, we've had snow on the ground since Thanksgiving and few days above freezing. It's even been to cold to enjoy skiing. Come on warmth.

Looking for a beach on the way out of YFO?

Mrs1911's favorite vacation activity is sitting on the beach. I'd like to leave YFO northward and pitch the tent on a beach for a night. Any of you current Californians know anything about https://www.casparbeachrvpark.com/home.html or https://koa.com/campgrounds/manchester-beach/ or https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=436 or have any other suggestions?

It's a pity that I wasn't able to explore these areas more when we lived near San Francisco or Sacramento.

I'll have some suggestions for you as we get closer (think Monterey)... I think a beach may be in your future.

More info on what you're looking for, where you're heading, and how you're traveling. How long you want to stay at a beach or campground, too. Will you be riding and camping, driving and camping, or motelling? Do you want to go west all the way to the coast? There are great beaches all up and down the coast, and great campgrounds on or near ocean beaches--both private and state. There are also great beaches and campgrounds at places like Lake Tahoe, which is due north of YNP and a couple hundred miles inland from the Pacific, but you might need to plan well in advance for camping reservations (same with state parks on the coast, for that matter). We can make some suggestions based on all that.

Besides, it's funny how we progress from tri-cycles to bi-cycles to motor-cycles, and then regress back to trikes....
Sam, I hope you never have to come to that point in your life... it's a difficult choice.
Tyler, at some point in life, we will all get old(er), and consider going to trikes to keep the wind still on our face. That's why it was a little bit funny/ironic to me, it is the human fragility/frailty which will eventually catch up with everyone.

Some people go out before frailty hits - usually we think of that as tragic, but for some it might be a more fitting end for how a life was lived....

The plan is to leave YFO Sunday morning headed somewhat northward. We'll be riding and camping. I'd like to spend Sunday night sitting on a Pacific Ocean beach watching the sun set, with the tent pitched as close as possible. I've found the 3 campgrounds linked above as possibilities, MacKerricher State Park being my first choice at the moment, but online reviews are all over the place, especially for the private ones. Monday we'll run up the California coast for a while before turning toward Montana

@1911: The state parks are very nice here. I've never stayed at MacKerricher but it's in a gorgeous area, and the ride north from there on hwy 1 to 101 is one of my very favorites. There's not too much "on the coast" heading north from there on--101 is mostly inland a few miles but does come back with a few stretches with great ocean views. The Oregon coast offers more consistent ocean views, along with heavier traffic.

Tyler organized a gathering a couple years ago around Manchester, and I'm not sure where they stayed. See what she recommends for camping down that way. One benefit of doing that is you would come in farther south on highway 1 than the Google-suggested route to Ft. Bragg (near MacKerricher), you'd also hit the ultimate California coast ride, IMO, highway 1 between Jenner and Ft. Bragg, empty miles along the edge of the continent on a curving, gorgeous road with nothing to your left but the ocean and a couple hundred foot drop-off down to empty beaches (that you can't get to except by flying off the guardrail-less road.) But it's damn dramatic. And fun riding. And very little traffic, since it just connects some pretty isolated spots. Kind of a long day from Mariposa, though.

edit: Heading north on 101, if you come to it by hwy 1 at Leggett, you will pass by several very nice state parks, some of them right on the coast. Check a state parks website. Don't forget the Avenue of the Giants, too, just off 101 south of Eureka.

I second Sac Mike's recommendation of hitting Hwy 1 well south of MacKerricher and Manchester. That is part of my plan following Sunday morning's departure from Mariposa. See my post above at:

If I were coming as far as you to ride California, I wouldn't miss the oceanside ride up Hwy. 1 from roughly Cambria north. And the stretch north from Bodega Bay all the way to Leggett may be the best part, though that is saying a lot. Just overall, it's altogether one of my favorite stretches of scenery and road anywhere, topped by the rhythmic 22 miles of perfect twisties from where Hwy. 1 leaves the ocean to where it hits 101 at Leggett.

We've got some great motorcycle roads in the state, but you will kick yourself if you pass on what Hwy. 1 offers that time of year.

I think this is where Tyler holds court at Manchester Beach, but maybe the queen will be along to make her proclamation soon enough..

Yup... that's the place! You can camp or they have a variety of cabin options from the basic to with more amenities (i.e. bathroom, small kitchen, etc.). There's a grocery store about a half mile south of the campground so stock up there. They also have a community outdoor cooking area next to the main building... short walk to the beach... hot tub too! Try Rollerville Cafe just down the road for breakfast (drive out to the lighthouse and take a tour) or, if you want a nice dinner, drive into Point Arena (about 5 miles from Manchester) and sit by the window to watch the sunset as you dine at Pier Chowder House & Tap Room.

Thanks all. That's the kind of stuff that makes signing up to a forum worthwhile
