I might wanna try and dip a toe in the Pacific...since I'll be so close.
Join us. Would that be a ride to dip? Might even shag a little.

edit:

dip and shag may have different meanings on opposite coasts

I mean this shag https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_shag

I don't mean this dip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK2WEPdbmUc

By the time I get to YFO, if I have things anywhere close to my way, I will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,500 miles in.

I'm going to go to the coast. I'm going to ride PCH. And I'm going to put a toe in the ocean.

And for that matter, I'm going to see a whole lot of other things while I'm over there, some of which I have no idea what they are.

You'll see a lot of fruits and nuts - as you get to the coast. That's for sure.
From the Monterey area through the Santa Cruz mountains and then up north of the Golden Gate, you'll see an endless number of Subaru wagons and Priuss...what's the plural form of Prius? Prii? And they all tend to be covered with liberal-leaning bumper stickers. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

My ride out will be 2561 miles...last time I went out to california, I never made it to the ocean.

I don't think you should be making promises, you may not want to keep. JSNS!
Just in case somebody has joined this conversation mid-stream, understand that Mrs1911 will be with me on this trip and it is she that I will shag with by either definition, and she does not dip.......Copenhagen........when I'm around.

For the record I have a Mossberg sticker on my Prius.

One thing in our favor with all the rain and snow in the high country, the waterfalls of Yosemite will be really good this year.

After the California coast falls into the ocean, then we can start to worry about the nut in Peardale with a Prius..

SacMike:

@1911: The state parks are very nice here. I've never stayed at MacKerricher but it's in a gorgeous area, and the ride north from there on hwy 1 to 101 is one of my very favorites. There's not too much "on the coast" heading north from there on--101 is mostly inland a few miles but does come back with a few stretches with great ocean views. The Oregon coast offers more consistent ocean views, along with heavier traffic.
Tyler organized a gathering a couple years ago around Manchester, and I'm not sure where they stayed. See what she recommends for camping down that way. One benefit of doing that is you would come in farther south on highway 1 than the Google-suggested route to Ft. Bragg (near MacKerricher), you'd also hit the ultimate California coast ride, IMO, highway 1 between Jenner and Ft. Bragg, empty miles along the edge of the continent on a curving, gorgeous road with nothing to your left but the ocean and a couple hundred foot drop-off down to empty beaches (that you can't get to except by flying off the guardrail-less road.) But it's damn dramatic. And fun riding. And very little traffic, since it just connects some pretty isolated spots. Kind of a long day from Mariposa, though.

edit: Heading north on 101, if you come to it by hwy 1 at Leggett, you will pass by several very nice state parks, some of them right on the coast. Check a state parks website. Don't forget the Avenue of the Giants, too, just off 101 south of Eureka.

I think this is where Tyler holds court at Manchester Beach, but maybe the queen will be along to make her proclamation soon enough..

I second Sac Mike's recommendation of hitting Hwy 1 well south of MacKerricher and Manchester. That is part of my plan following Sunday morning's departure from Mariposa. See my post above at:

If I were coming as far as you to ride California, I wouldn't miss the oceanside ride up Hwy. 1 from roughly Cambria north. And the stretch north from Bodega Bay all the way to Leggett may be the best part, though that is saying a lot. Just overall, it's altogether one of my favorite stretches of scenery and road anywhere, topped by the rhythmic 22 miles of perfect twisties from where Hwy. 1 leaves the ocean to where it hits 101 at Leggett.

We've got some great motorcycle roads in the state, but you will kick yourself if you pass on what Hwy. 1 offers that time of year.

Yup... that's the place! You can camp or they have a variety of cabin options from the basic to with more amenities (i.e. bathroom, small kitchen, etc.). There's a grocery store about a half mile south of the campground so stock up there. They also have a community outdoor cooking area next to the main building... short walk to the beach... hot tub too! Try Rollerville Cafe just down the road for breakfast (drive out to the lighthouse and take a tour) or, if you want a nice dinner, drive into Point Arena (about 5 miles from Manchester) and sit by the window to watch the sunset as you dine at Pier Chowder House & Tap Room.

WOW! Basecamp says this https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?hl=en&authuser=0&mid=1KNOv8ZVv-2g_8dkPwPpwFQFohnM&ll=38.23319488663669%2C-122.23869354980468&z=8 is 350 miles/7 hours. Is this by any stretch realistic in Sunday morning traffic? If it is I'm soooo doing it. Heck, leaving YFO at 8:00 and adding 3 hrs still puts me on the beach in plenty of time for sunset.

"Sunday morning traffic" is what you'll be riding in as you leave Mariposa. "Sunday afternoon traffic" is what you'd be hitting somewhere in the Bay Area, not really the same thing at all. But yes, do-able (remember, we can split lanes here, though maybe weekend Bay Area traffic isn't the most perfect place to do your initial practicing of that).

You'll be blowing past a lot of other stuff you might not want to blow past without taking some slower looks at, though, and doing a lot of your riding on just. plain. freeways. We could come up with routes, ideas, suggestions for other ways to get where you want to go and hit the coast on the second day, maybe. Just a thought. But you could make it pretty easily with a good morning start and maybe a couple of slight adjustments in your route. Like, do you really need to ride through San Francisco? And over the Golden Gate? Both beautiful, great scenery, but not the fastest route, I'm pretty sure. One other thought, if you're camping, setting up a campsite at sunset is never ideal.

Thank god you've got all this time to think about it.

The Golden Gate is pretty spectacular if you've never been over it. While that route is doable, as SM said, you'll not have much time to stop and smell the roses... the PCH is one of the most beautiful stretches of roadway and, you might want to consider your pillion and break this up into two days and find a place for a little romance (perhaps in the wine country north of SF... some fund roads up that way too!)... might need a break from all that camping... I've got lots of suggestions!

Suggestions for the romance or the riding:) :) :) :)

1911 apparently needs to get out of Calif ASAP, save for the desire to camp a night on the Pacific. The proposed route should do the job, but getting to I-5 around Fresno, then north to 299 west and 101 north would allow the quickest exit while still hitting the OR or NorCA coast to camp. Leave Mariposa early on Sunday via that I-5 route and you should have time to set up camp on the beach somewhere in the Trinidad, CA to Brookings, OR area. 199 northeast the morning after camping on the beach.

Sending thoughts and prayers for your pops RfH.

Hoping you two can still make the trip out...two wheels or four, doesn't matter.
