I took the after-market Beowulf mufflers off and sold them to another forum member. As expected, I had to order a set of gaskets to re-install the OEM exhaust, so the FJR sits in the MC garage waiting...

After a couple of stout Scottish ales last night, my curiosity got the best of me.

Okay, how many others would start it up with just the unmuffled straight pipes? How many would admit they did this? I did and do.

Of course it was obnoxiously loud, but had an intriguing snarling tone, almost intimidating. It definitely projected high-performance power. My imagination (inner juvenile delinquent) had me doing a 3 a.m. urban werewolf prowl, dodging law enforcement even as I broadcast my location... Or, hunting down some straight-piped pirates and engaging in a real loud-pipes-save-lives safety competition. I think the unmuffled FJR would show 'em what's what.

Alas, the responsible adult in me dictates the bike will stay in its stall, neighbors and townsfolk left in peace, until the gaskets are here and the mufflers are in place ... but 40 years ago...?

That made me kind of saucy ....

One more ale and you might have gone for it ... Probably better you stayed in the garage ...

Bit it would have been glorious !!!

Fired up the Ducati s with no mufflers when I switched out the oem mufflers for the Leo Vince ones.

Holy Crap, ya don't want to do that in an inclosed space.

I did with mine during the transmission fix last summer, just briefly, no video. I wanted to ride it past the house with a camera rolling, but it was 11:30 at night and I needed it usable the next morning.

Idling and revving is one thing, but we all know that a motor sounds different when screaming under an actual load!!!! Damn me and my compassion for my neighbors!!!!

I haven't done that with the FJR, but on my TL1000R I have. I took it for a ride like that as well. It was LOUD! Sounded good though :)

Like pullin the trigger on a nice short barrel riffle.... INDOORS.. Not a good idea...

There is a reason that people like suppressors on the guns.... they don't silence anything like the media would leave you to believe, it sure is nice to have that muffler on them to take the bite and bark out of it......

Had to put the baffles back in the Leo Vince's on the FJR, with the woman on board there is a very heavy low droning at my seat, not there without pillon.... but we long rides all the time together so I'm not losing my heearing for the sake of coolness....

Straight headers are cool for a minute !!!

I have an Akropovic exhaust on the ZRX, and the rear portion has to come off to get at the oil filter.* I live out in the sticks, and I will readily admit that I always start it with just the open header. I've never ridden it that way, but it sure sounds good in the shop.

* No big deal -- it's less than a minute to R&R

After Dad crashed his '07 FJR back in '08 it lost its mufflers. I rode the bike to the dealership for repairs while Pop with his busted up ribs rode in the truck behind me. Good Lord, it was loud. Obnoxiously loud. After about 60 seconds it was Irritatingly Loud.

Just like the real experts will tell you, it lost all of its low end grunt. It was so weak on the bottom end that I was worried there was even more damage than we had thought. I rode the bike home after the repairs and with its mufflers back on it was nice and strong like always. Loud Pipes do not necessarily equal Big Power.

For many of them it's not about power.

But if you're into hot rodding and want more power, louder pipes will probably be a part of that package. But even then, the loudest, most obnoxious pipes are not necessary. I live in a rural area, and the road / driveway to my house is over 1/8 mile. I can ride the ZRX, with the Akropovic pipe, up that drive and into my shop without my wife hearing me in the house.

I have never done it with my FJR ( have not owned it very long) but!.......I have done it with a Seca550, a CB750 and a 99 Freightliner Classic with a 500 HP Detroit Diesel. The truck was VERY LOUD especially when I wound it up to 2100 and flipped the Jake Brake on...Good times...the bikes where cool too :)

P.S. and a 79 Honda prelude (first car) that I had straight pipe and a stinger on....LOL the things we thought where cool. I lowered that car by hacking the coils in half....Don't judge me..I was 17
