A Glimmer of Hope

Last Saturday, I stopped by CalCoast Motorsports to check in on Wabs. Service manager Josh stated they had been slammed, but hoped to work on Wabs next Tuesday (today!).

Called this afternoon, and the tech was actually working on Wabs!

Woot Woot!

Wabs is Coming Home!

The shop, CalCoast, is now confident they found the problem, a bad fuel pump.

They claim the new fuel pp is quieter, and voltage at the battery is 14+ over 4k rpm.

Sweet, if true!

So, tonight, unloaded Krzy8 and the mighty 426 from the mobile transport device, hooked the trailer up and and ready to rock and roll first thing in the morning to fetch Wabs!

Making it better, Patti tells me the DMV is finally ready to officially xnfr ownership.

Mananna has the opportunity to be a GREAT day!

I will post up pix on the journey to rescue Wabs mananna.....

I really hope is all well...

mañana está aquí
:clapping:
Joe2Lmaker - had to use Google for this...

Sí, mañana está aquí, y con ella trae un nuevo unlived día!

Can it be True? Is Wabs healthy again?

Woke up early, couldn't really sleep. Wabs is coming home! Left before sunrise, hit Tina's restaurant in Santa Margarita for too much food and decaf coffee. Harley really did enjoy the ham steak, though..

Sunrise over the ocean, somewhere around Pismo Beach. Kinda purty me thinks aloud to Harley 'Perhaps this is a good omen, eh HarleyDawg?"

2-SunRise.jpg

Who says black labbies can't smile? Harley was accosted by a German Shepherd last weekend at a free-dog beach. Freaking GS attacked out of nowhere and dear ol' Harley had to put the Shepherd in its place. This all took some gumption outta Harley-D-Dawg, and today, nearly a week later, is the first I've seen him happy again. Another good sign, eh Harley?

Then again, maybe it's still too early to think about all this Ari Rankum type o' stuff.

CalCoastMotorsports – big shop, family run, appears to be thriving.

6-CalCoast.jpg

Iggie's new ride – available now at CalCoast MotorSports.. come n' get it Iggie, I told the salesman you were interested, found your phone number and gave it to him so he can contact you.. just kiddin'..

7-FairlanersNewRide.jpg

New Vmax.. very nice. Something about the mighty VMax still tickles my fancy. The salesman was working me over hard until I made an offer he *could* refuse! LOL.

8-Vmax.jpg

New Manly V-Strom, 1000 cc of pure power. Not for me, I'm a Wee rider (650). This roaring beastie of machine is for RenoJohn status riders only. No posers allowed…

9-NewVstrom.jpg

Enough of the showroom, time to wander to the Service Dept… Hey, what's this puppy parked by the curb?

Wabs! Wabs! Damn good to see her back together again, not in pieces.

10-Wabs.jpg

Wabs from the side, ain't she purty?

11-WabsSide.jpg

Get Wabs loaded up in the trailer, head south to see Patti, complete the deal. Patti is doing pretty good, as good as she can, given the circumstances. For her, right now, the right now is right freakin now. The money from Wabs grants another 2 months, and at this point, it's each day/week/month at a time. This woman, my friends, has true grit, and it's easy to see how Tim fell for her..

No pix of the journey home, just droned, lost in thought, thinking of this and thinking of that, of things coulda/shoulda/woulda been but now never will, tempered by what the future may bring. Alaska-2010, Alaska-2010.

Arrived home with no LEO encounters, no death-defying feats of derring–do, just 110 bucks worth of fuel later, Wabs is home.

You may have noticed I did NOT check Wabs at the dealer. And for good reason. Fixed or not, Wabs was coming home. So, the first thing, after unloading, was to check battery voltages at varying RPM's.

But let me digress. The shop replaced the stator. No fix. Then they thought the fuel pump may be bad, and determined it was drawing 3x more current than a new DL650 they compared to. So a new fuel pump was ordered and installed, and viola! The charging circuit, they stated, was up to snuff.

I'm still not sure, so measured myself..

Vdc – Key on. BTW - on a DL650, key on = head light on. What kind of dumb idea is that?

12-VdcKeyOn.jpg

Vdc at idle.

13-VdcIdle.jpg

Vdc at 5k rpm

14-Vdc4kRpm.jpg

In other words, Wabs is back, and there's going to be trouble, ooooh-aahhhh, ooooh-aaahhhh, Wabs is Back!

Stablemates – I'm not yet sure what Krzy8 really thinks about having a low class ***** as a stablemate, but so far, the truce appears to be holding firm..

15-StableMates.jpg

Sunset – Last foto of the day.. A very good day!

And for tomorrow.. should I start wiring and re-farkelize Wabs or just ride?

Ride, Baby, Ride!

Glad to see the saga come to an end, although the next chapter should be equally as entertaining. Keep good notes, this is what M/C travel books are made of!

Nice write up. The bad thing is that from the beginning you said there was a problem with the fuel pump. If they would of just listen from the start they would of saved a bunch of troubleshooting time.

Nice Story with a Happy Ending! Now you've no excuse: Ride to Real de Catorce, Mexico on April 17 with Arizona FJR crew!!

You had me hooked with the picture of Harley. I have been owned by my Bear "Oso" for seven years now. I Love Labbies!!

I loooove a happy ending! :cray:

Exactly WHERE are you riding this morning? I'm anticipating the ride report including the rebirth of your new Wabs love affair.

Ride until you can't ride no more. That's what I do :) .

Bad winter weather is for makin sure your bike is ready to ride when good winter weather is around :)

Well, allrightynow Don! :good: Glad to hear that you are re-volted and have gas pressure again ;) While the customer may not always be right, they are always worth listening to, especially when they are knowledgeable.

Time to go get dirty!

Thanks for all the nice replies guyz! I'm typing on the laptop, riding pants and boots on, the day break looks really nice out there..

Me thinks there's a good breakfast waiting me in Paso Robles, a toy run from Avila Beach to Creston, and... and... then there's all those backroads... and.. and...

I'm outta here! :clapping: Time to go Wabbinating!

AWESOME stuff Don,

Eearly on you suspected fuel pump issue and I was on the list discounting that idea.

**Please give me my earned *****-slap next time we meet up ..and I hope that is soon!!!

Looks like you got the issue behind you and now time to enjoy some good adventures!!! Cheers to you and WABS

Great story Don, I am very glad you got it fixed as electrical gremlins can be some of the worst.

One real GREAT suggestion I saw was to check the connectors for corrosion - particularly the primary ground. Commonly a problem when this type of stuff happens.

One other suggestioin. I saw early in the thread you were going to remove all fasteners and put anit-sieze on them because some were corroded. A good idea but you should consider most of the large fasteners (like the rear subframe bolts) shooul really be cleaned and then put back in with blue loctite instead. That is still a v twin at heart and I have had many back out on me and it cost me dearly in Alaska when I lost two of the four subframe bolts.

Loctite:

Subframe

Fork clinch bolts

rear rack bolts

Footpeg/Frame bolts

Just a suggestion (from experience). Alask will be a tough ride on the bike.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the good advice!

Very much intrigued by your Alaska ride... any links? I'm ALL ears. Well, ok, not like SkooterG ears, but for me, all ears!

Finally, Wabs is Home

After many trials and tribulations, Wabs is home. Disgraced by a trailer ride home, but hopefully fixed, Wabs is ready for the first local test run.

Interesting, how fantasy and reality can juxtapose..

The bars ain't right. To far forward, to far up.

The Bill Mayer seat is crunching mi Boyz. WTFO, Tim <_< .

175 miles later, back to the house. Then strip Wabs to parade rest, re-wire all electronic gizmos taken off.. FuzeBlock, gps, starcomm, radar.. it amazes me how long it takes to do things correctly.

Over 2 days, the following has been done:

1. Install Zumo 550 cradle.

2. Install wiring for Escort 550.

3. Install FuzeBlock

4. Blah de Blah

Still on the list to do:

1. Eliminate 1 headlight bulb relay circuit to save output juice when running other consumers (heated vest, HID's, etc)

2. Install true knobbie tires

3. ????
