For anyone doing this ride that has never been on these roads before, strap in and hang on for some thrills and scenery to boot. No time for looking at GPS, let alone maps. Get a group leader who is familiar with the roads and have a blast.

I'll be riding up from SoCAL and collecting MsNASCAR in Santa Rosa on the 26th and then heading out early on Thur for Reno, via hwy 12 and 88 and then up 395. If anyone in the North Bay area care to join us, you can PM me or post here.

This is amazing. We started out in group #2 (2 ups) and we all ended up as group #4. What's up?
We also started out leaving at 0800. Now, we'll all be gone by 0800. And you won't be blowing by us, unless you have to fix a flat.
Can I be in group ZERO? ;)
Is 0700 as early as you drunkards will leave? Heck, that's like 10 AM my time. And I usually get up around 5. Half the day will be over by the time you slackers even start rolling around.

Anyone in for the dawn patrol?????? :dribble: Or are the roads closed and/or dangerous early in the AM?
I think Bluestreek would be down for earlier departure, able to lead, and anyone else can chime in. No problem rearranging the groups to accomodate. The more the merrier!

I stated waaaaaaay up in the thread that I'd be willing to leave earlier... so if there's a pre-7:00 group (my body clock will be at 9:00 AM then) I'm ok with that... or group 3 could be the new 6:30 group.... :)

Why do I get this mental image of 30+ FJRs in the parking lot recreating a scene from the Oklahoma land rush...

Well, I kinda got sideswiped by this thread. 8 pages? Sheesh. No way I'm going back through all that gibber jabber. I gave up after page 3. Now I'm back on track.

Has the recommended route changed since it was posted in MS S&T format? That's what I use (although my GPS doesn't). If that file is up to date, then I'm good to go!

An early tee time sounds good to me...we also get to ride for a couple of hours in some of the nicest weather of the day. Count MNFJR05 in as part of group .5. :D

We tweaked it somewhat based on some suggestions from exskibum. I've got a Mapsource generated route that I can email you if you send me your addy...

I've also added another very small tweak... apparently the best place to get gas near Topaz Lake is the Topaz Lodge and Casino. For those of you with Mapsource, it's listed as a point of interest... once the route on 89 T's into 395, the casino is a couple miles North (left turn). We'll get gas in Nevada, then retrace our path South on 395 towards Sonora Junction.

Ok, need some help from the locals... I was checking the Mapsource route after adding the tweak for the Topaz Casino, because I'm an anally retentive engineer, and Mapsource can sometimes have a mind of it's own when creating routes. It will often decide to take wierd paths that parallel the one you expected it to take, and unless you run through it at a fine detail, can surprise you. So I found the following detour off of Hwy 108 when we first get on to it near Sonora Junction...

Here it is at a closer resolution...

Near as I can tell, the only road "name" associated with it is Silver Creek Road. Looks like it exits 108 near a small airport, then catches up with 108 about 8 miles later. Is this the road we want to take, or is it some small fire road that would be the subject for many future "Remember when Groo routed us down that goat path.... " stories? Just as a side note, it looks twistier than sheeot....

Looking forward to the goat path stories, Groo. You want to stay on 108. Not at all sure what that is, but from the looks of it, it may be a route through the Marines' mountain warfare center which is right about there. Don't think I've ever heard live ammo used there, but if Pegscraper ******* any more, maybe you guys could send him ahead with a rag on his head to see. :assassin:

Thanks Ski... Wouldn't that have been a story I'd have never lived down... "Yeah, that sounds bad, but remember that time we got routed through the Marines artillery range?"...

Changes upcoming... after I go kick my Mapsource CD a few times.... ;)

Screw all you guys....I'm going to hit a brothel with about four hundred bucks. I'll get my twisties in........and my turns.

i hope to hell this heatwave is gone by then.
It will be. But there will be another, even hotter by then. They don't call the following week's event "Hot August Nights" for nothin'.

Adjustments made. Check 'em and adjust as desired.

Cool... put it down as 6:30 Kickstands up... which will probably be 6:40 by the time everyone is snapped, plugged, velcroed, adjusted, powered on and giving me a thumbs up. ;)

By the way, for those interested, from the usno website...

Is there any advantage or disadvantage of doing the Big Dog Friday ride clockwise instead of counterclockwise? I'm wondering if I take a group at dawn and go the opposite direction, there'd be even less congestion of FJRs.

Was even thinking that if there is no real disadvantage to either direction, perhaps every other group should do the big loop in the opposite direction. That would give even better separation on the big loop. That's my theory anyway.

TICK TOCK... Man the clock isn't going FAST ENOUGH!!!!

T minus 4 days and counting! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
