Ummm... Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't oil changes supposed to be done cold? Other than running the engine for a minute to stir it up a bit, which I wouldn't imagine would heat things up that much.
Manufactures specify hot so dealers won't have to sit around waiting for the vehicle to cool. They specify something so as to give the impression of knowing more than you.
I find if sucking oil out the dipstick (as is common on Mercedes) then it's best done hot. Same amount comes out hot or cold but 5W-40 comes out several minutes faster hot.

Others such as Husaberg dirtbike and 2.2L Sonoma same quantity hot or cold. 2000 Avalon and 2007 Prius took more oil to refill after a cold drain than hot. So I conclude more old oil came out.

As for to notion of suspending sediment in hot oil, do you really want to distribute that all over your engine before draining? If sediment exists would you not rather have it concentrated at the bottom near the drain to be pushed out by cleaner oil above?

Yeah, double checked the manual and it does say to warm the engine for several minutes if cold. Next time I'll try and remember to check before I open my mouth. :D

Purchased the Clearwater Darla.... Will post pics of the final install once they get in. Anyone have some tips for the headlight high beam wire ? I have a PDM60 so the other wires will go to that. I don't look forward to opening up the nose (seems like a bitch to remove the front cowl.

Yea, because the sediment surely forms no other time than right after the last shutdown, right before you change the oil...
Not at all. If there is sediment then hot redistributes all over the engine undoing the past 10 hours or more of cooling and draining. Then that fresh coat and sediment will remain between changes. If settled to the bottom of the engine then it is closest to the drain and stands it's best chance of getting out.

The Avalon was of particular interest because oil filter was mounted at angle over front motor mount. Removed hot and full of oil made a huge mess not to mention burning hand on exhaust. Removed cold almost no oil spilled. So clean filter change plus 5 quarts cold was just under full but hot resulted in over full. Made cold an easy win-win choice.

Edit:

Umm, let me think about my contribution conflagration response to the previous post.

.... it might make folks happy (as in "me") to shift the oil-related responses OUT OF THIS THREAD, since they're, like, off topic and ****.

:D

I love oil threads, I learn so much every time I read one.

I walked past my FJR on a nice 80 degree sunny day...and dreamed of riding to flat straight and boring Ohio.

I rode my FJR to work. Then I rode it home. (Hint: That is what I did to my FJR TODAY.) Dad rode his FJR to a doctor's appointment. Then he rode it home. He washed and polished it before he left.

Tomorrow I will change the oil. I may wash and polish it, but I may not. It is about to get ridden to The Great Smoky Mountains for a week long ride and of course Dad will be following along on his FJR.

I do not feel the details of the planned oil change are worth discussing in this thread or any other. It is a damned oil change.

Just got the Darlas also for my 14ES. Talked to Clearwater today, they said you could get at the relay by taking off the inner black panels, not the whole cowl. Is that right?

This is true. Someone here recently did a . . . wait . . . click here.

Here's what you'll be looking at:

And another with the cable tie removed allowing you to slip the relay off its perch for easier access.

Got 'er inspected, tag renewed, and given a little exercise. It'd been a while since I rode the FJR- it's easy to forget how this bike gathers speed without drama. The drama can show up when you charge the first corner! Rewarded it with a wash. Happy bike.

Gotta admit, I had the '14 out to Clearwater this week, and THEY did the installation. I just have to defer to the experts on a job like that. But oh, those new lights! Now I've got Darlas (with amber lens covers--2,000+ lumens each) on the forks, a single Krista 2 (3,000+ lumens) on the left mirror mount, and an Erica (6,000) on the right. Do I really need 13,000 lumens at full power? Hell, I dunno, but there is no such thing as a DARK road anymore! Glenn suggested that setup. The Krista has more of a focused beam for long reach, and the Erica is more of a flood; it's directed a few degrees to the right to keep the roadside nice and bright. Incredible. I need to take a night ride with somebody with good camera skills, and a better camera than mine too, I guess, to try and post some pics soon. I don't think you could do better than this.

I don't know if I'll ever be "done" setting the bike up, but it's close. Givi 52 trunk and a Cortech tank bag are done now. But that stock front window doesn't really do it for me. One of these days I'll be heading over to California Scientific. The temptation with these great vendors being local is awful tough to fight. Thank God Russell isn't a Sacramento company.

I tippy toed my way to work over ice covered bridges and ramps. Yesterday's rain hadn't dried and it was 27°F this morning, it was scary in places. I made minimal direction changes and no momentum changes, I'm sure that it would have been a cinch to get the traction control light and ABS to come on but why offer Murphy a chance to intervene if you don't have to. I'm looking forward to the reward of a nice ride home. The long way.
