But again, if you don't have a GSM capable Verizon phone, which most Verizon phones are not, there will be very little service for your $15.

I bought my Verizon Moto Droid 2 specifically because it is one of the few that has GSM.

And ++++1 on Fred's comment about data charges.  Forgot about that on the first day of a trip once.  Ouch.
Yo Fred, Brian Boles posted this up over at AZ Beemers website: Is your Verizon phone GSM capable?
Just talked with the local verizon guys and my droid is not GSM capable. But he reccomended that if you want to call *611 for customer service they do have a GSM loaner phone program. They will send one to you and switch your service to that phone. As long as you don't lose it or damage it, very little cost if not free of charge.

More information about phones in Mexico from AZ Beemers Club Member and our Baja Co-Ride Leader Brian Boles.

Another option (that I used before Verizon had GSM phones) is a pre-paid Mexican Telcel cell phone.

I bought a cheap phone for about $25.  You load minutes with cards that are available at all tienditas all over the country. It's also the cheapest rate for a Mex->US call.

It's a little hassle to get the phone, because unlike the USA, where criminals can purchase pre-pay phones with cash and no questions asked, the Mexican government keeps tight track of cell numbers.

Almost everything you would want to know about phones in Mexico here -

From AZB Back Road Bob Little:

We just did the Verizon loaner phone for our trip to Europe. It costs $20.00 for shipping and handling and phone calls from Europe were $1.29 per minute, which is pretty reasonable. Plan on at least 10 days before departure to order the phone. You will have your same cell number, as your regular phone will be disabled while the loaner is in use. $299.00 if you lose or damage the loaner phone.  > :(

BUMP REMINDER!

2+ months from now we Southwest FJR Forumites are riding South for Fame, Gold and Fortune: Or at least Margaritas, marlin fishing and a suntan. If you're going you need to be thinking about obtaining your Mexican Motorcycle Insurance and make sure you have your hotel room booked at our hotel in Cabo San Lucas: Bonito Los Cabos Blanco Resort.

PASSPORTS: If you do not have a current passport, either from Estados Unidos or Canuckistan, you have just enough time right now to get one - muy pronto!

SIGNIFICANT OTHERS: If you're flying your loved one down to SJD Mexico, you need to book their flights immediately; this flight will definitely sell out soon!

I'm ready to head out now. :yahoo: Room is booked, Moma's flight is booked. Passport renewal has been sent in. Insurance will be purchased soon. New front tire. My co workers are tired of hearing about it. Yep, I'm covered.

I knew about guns and Mexico, but my wife just told me not to bring a knife there also, even a pocket knife. https://tijuana.usconsulate.gov/tijuana/warning.html

Baja Depart on 1/25/13 to End Date 2/4/13 - Please get your Moto Insurance from my Friend Angelica Garcia at MexPro: Angel's toll free # is 1-888-467-4639.

I paid $156.10 for my ACE Policy on my 2009 BMW F650GS Twin with a value of $8,000 dollars. 1) NOTE: They'll only pay the blue book value on replacement.

2) Only go with the ACE Insurance Company: On the MexPro web site you will see ABA is $10 cheaper - but do not go with ABA, go with ACE instead, trust me!

One can also order money (Pesos) online and they FedX it to your house. Maybe not the best exchange rate but you will have money in hand. I ordered 6000 Pesos. FYI

In addition to needing Pesos, we need to find out if we can get our Tourist Permits at the Tecate Border Crossing. Can someone please research this, por favor?

I've repeatedly tried to get an answer online, if we fail at this I will need to go down to the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix. Do not want to cross at TJ or Mexicali!

From AZB Member Back Road Bob Little:

Don, I will look into the Tourists Permits at Tecate or stop at the consulate on Monday.Pesos can be obtained at local banks, though not all branches carry them.

How much do folks normally carry across the border?

I'm ordering up 700 USD of Mexican Pesos from the Chase Bank across the street from my house.

Only takes 2 business days to get the pesos to my branch, will give Miss Donna 100 USD worth.

Once at Cabo San Lucas we will get our Pesos from ATM machines, most economical way to do it!

Mary has arranged a limousine for the Gals, cost each will be approximately $20+ USD one way for the Cabo San Lucas limousine ride.

Mary needs an accurate count of women flying in on US Air Flight # 334 from Phoenix on 1/28/13 departing 11:15 am. OK Everybody, please post up here ASAP.

Hi Robert Little Thank you for your reservation and payment at https://www.transcabo.com

Your confirmation number is WW0909460108

Please print the page attached in a PDF file and show it to our Airport Representative upon your arrival.

Thank you for choosing Transcabo as your transportation company.
Our Tour and Travel department will be happy to assist you with planning all your optional activities during your stay.

TRAVEL ALERT AND USEFUL INFORMATION

Dear Client:
We would like to make you aware of a developing situation at the Cabo San Lucas
/ San Jose Del Cabo Airport. There are many aggressive representatives of various
resorts, hotels and timeshare properties, located in the airport.

These people work only on commission and will offer you many discounts (some
items even for free) just to persuade you to go to their resort. These vendors
can easily be mistaken for some sort of authority or airport staff. They work
in the area immediately following customs and will approach you inquiring about
your transportation plans.

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU GO STRAIGHT THROUGH THE AIRPORT AND DO NOT EVEN
TALK TO THESE PEOPLE! THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON AT ALL FOR YOU TO GIVE ANYBODY
AT THE AIRPORT ANY MONEY!

After you go through immigration, pick up your luggage and pass customs, you will
see a room with timeshare booths. We ask you to please avoid talking to these people
and take the RIGHT SIDE EXIT that reads, Ground Transportation, Taxis & Bus.

Waiting at this exit for you will be a TRANSCABO representative wearing an orange
polo shirt, holding up a sign with the company's logo. He/She will transport you to
your resort. It is very important that you take the right hand exit otherwise you
won't be able to find our transportation.
If you take a taxi or any other means of transportation credit will not apply.

For more information contact us at: [email protected]

We wish you a wonderful stay in Los Cabos

I purchased Mexican Pesos from Chase Bank, two day turnaround on receiving the currency. Exchange rate is currently .08399, $699.64 USD netted me 8,330 Pesos. I highly recommend having at least 700 pesos, less than sixty bucks, when we cross the border in your possession, for any unforeseen costs.

12 pesos / dollar. That's not a bad rate. Current bank rate is 12.8 pesos / dollar.
