Took my brother, (and his new to him, 2005 Yamaha Venture) on a 250 mile ride to lunch.

Installed the Ram mount for my Garmin Nuvi 44LM . Checked the weather 27 today 36 47 56 54F the next four days. Looks like it will be awhile yet before I get to take my first FJR ride, need some rain to help clean up the roads . Still have to have the center stand reinstalled as well as the exhaust and do the fork work.

Installed new Gen 3 rear shock. Top shock bolt was a bitch to get out past the ABS stuff. Neighbor came over and helped. Curiosity got best of us when we had old and new shocks laying out. I know the spring rates are different but just for grins we took a caliper and measured thickness of the spring itself. Gen 2 spring measured 12 mm Gen 3 comes in at 14mm. I think the bike might even sit a little higher now! Out of time for the day so have to test ride tomorrow.

Rode about 150 miles to Baton Rouge and back. Got to watch Redfish Hunter play lumberjack. His dad astutely pointed out that my current rear tire is mounted backwards. I've ridden about 3000 miles that way, although THANKFULLY I do not think I've been on wet pavement.

My tire mounting dude has done dozens of tires for me, and I'm quite certain THOUSANDS in his life. Very unusual.

Stopped to say high to GSquared on the way home. Nice ride - mostly slab but for some unknown reason, it wasn't too bad today.

The Gen3 shock made Dad's '07 sit a bit higher with him on it. It does not compress as much under hard cornering which translates into more available lean angle. It definitely made a huge difference for him, I hope yours does the same for you.

Installed 1 of 4 speed bleeders so I could flush the mucky clutch fluid.

Notes to anyone else planning on doing this:

1) Double check your part numbers. The rear brake is the odd bleeder, not the clutch.

2) Make sure the line you're using to connect to the bleeder actually fits over the nipple. Took me longer to get the line on than it did to installer the bleeder and flush the system.

To make it easier, just order the hose when you order the sb's. Guaranteed to fit

.

Also, if you've (the general "you") not used sb's hose, brake fluid over time will make the hose very hard. Like petrified hard. I stuck a nail in the wall above my table and hang the hose over it with both ends dangling into an old coffee can to allow the fluid to freely drain. Been using the same hose for many fluid changes on bike, car and pickups. I suspect whatever generic hose you use will react the same.

Finished the fork spring replacement and oil change. This is going to be different! The old springs were installed with at least 10 mm to little preload, and were the OEM. The new ones are 1.1 springs and have 15 mm preload. The front of the bike is about 15 mm higher sag to start. I knew it was soft and low, just didn't know how badly.

Isn't there a way to do that through the menu? OOOHH! Sorry, just realized...

Okay, I know that was just way wrong. I had a weak moment. Sorry, mean it.

Rode bike to work this morning. New rear shock has improved the ride to the extent it feels like a whole different bike! Unfortunately it also illustrates that it's way past time to upgrade the fork springs....Guess it's shopping time again.

Rode her just over 1,000 miles this past weekend collecting BMR points. Had to skip a few locations on Sunday, since I overslept 90 minutes. Dog is getting very old, and she sleeps in late nowadays, so, yeah, it's all her fault that I didn't achieve finisher status yesterday.

Saturday was through exurban Atlanta, checking off post offices. Sunday was post offices, too, but through Upstate SC on the way to Charlotte: Clover, Blacksburg, Oconee nuke plant, Wellford, Duncan, Mayo, Salem .... and a triple-score post office in Huntersville, NC. Bike's up on the sidewalk in this photo, almost touching the building.

This is a day late, on Sunday flushed the clutch fluid while waiting for it to warm up a bit. Took a ride with a friend from Minneapolis to Hugo, then to Marine on the St. Croix, north to Taylors Falls, next to Grantsburg, over to Cambridge and home. A bit more than a 170 mile loop. It made for a nice day.

I've been out riding today after setting the sag. What I thought was noise in the cowling and windshield is now silent, so it was the forks banging around. The dive is gone and the bike does feel more confident in curves and rough roads. I seem to have hit the right settings as the ride is not at all harsh, just more controlled and quiet.

Dusted off the FJR, then took the Monster up to the top of Mt. Lemon. Still snow at the peak so it's still winter.
