Wheatie, I'll be based out of my kid's house in Charlotte, but I'd be honored to follow you for any stretch of the ride from Hotlanta to the Queen City.

In the GREAT APRIL WEATHER typically enjoyed in the Southland.

It was 28 this morning as I drove the truck home from work. I just glanced at the FJR on my way into the house. We are supposed to get into the 60s tomorrow and then rain every day for the entire week.

I guess with all that rain the FJR is going to be dirty for the entire week.

Things are getting back to normal here finally.

The roads will be sandy until we get a good hard rain. Use caution if coming to visit...

Here is part of the big tease in our area once it does start to warm up. A snow is predicted so the towns 'brine' the roads to make plowing easier. It snows 2 feet and the snow sticks, so the towns salt the roads. Now the plows come along and scrape off the brine and salt, entombing it in the snow banks along the road. Repeat every 2-3 days for months. Now we have 6-8 foot snow banks along ALL the roads. As the weather begins to warm and the glaciers are in retreat the snow banks begin to thaw, sending little streams of water out across the roads. Including all the afore mentioned salt. Driving through the water coats your car with a heavy saline solution that dries to a thick white film. Then one day it suddenly is all the way up to mid 40s, the sun is shining and it looks like a perfect ride day. Then you see the little salt laden water streams across the roads. Would you ride? Knowing the big snow banks could be resalting the roads for a couple of months would you say screw it and ride anyway? Do you want to wash your bike after every ride? If you do, what are the chances that you get all the salt out of all the little metal bits and more worrisome, all the electrical connections? Well, we still have a while before we have to make these big life decisions :)

I made that mistake some years back in January; wasn't able to clean the bike immediately and the salt did a number on the chrome. Nowadays, when there's salt on the roads, I run my old pickup and wait for a good rain to clean the roads.

Criteria for spring rides:

Snow and ice on the roads has to be gone; at least in the areas where I am riding.

Temperature above freezing - a surprise patch of black ice where snow melt froze on the road surface could ruin your whole day. WATCH FOR SHADED AREAS; even on a "nice" day.

Not until after a decent rain to wash most of the salt off. If still a bit salty, only go if the roads are dry. Wet brine is VERY tough on bikes, as Ionbeam just mentioned.

I don't worry too much about leftover traction sand on the roads or potholes. If I waited for highway crews to get that cleared up, I might not ride until late July. Sand is a concern, especially in the corners. Not really a big problem as long as you ride like an old lady.

Not too bad for weather this coming week although the above spring riding criteria won't be met. Supposed to be another significant snow event next weekend and there has been a subtle shift in the long range (Accuweather) forecast. Instead of "average" temperatures for the remainder of March, it is now looking like ~5 degrees F below average most days so I suspect I will miss my usual St. Patrick's day start (again) this year.

This is a good reason to have a "beater bike" in your garage (like my '04 Vstrom) along with the other bike(s) that you actually care about their appearance.

I almost went out for a first ADV NH tag of the year today (temps up around freezing) but opted to take care of some other stuff instead. Maybe tomorrow.

OTOH I rode my '05 in the salt and brine spray for several years and many times was unable to wash it afterwards due to frozen garden hoses. You really wouldn't know by looking at it. The FJR seems to hold up fairly well to wintery road spooge abuse. I did look at the suspension pivots fairly regularly and keep them well greased.

YMMV

And last weekend. I broke down and washed the truck, it was clean until I went to work the next morning

Notice the snow bank behind the pole. See the truck behind it?

Mid 50s at Sugar Bowl yesterday and today. Went skiing yesterday, but what snow we have there is melting too quickly. We need to bring Wheaties out here again to break this drought. Last time he was out in 2011, the Sierra passes weren't all open until late June, IIRC.

Around 70 here today, and almost too nice out on the deck. Going for a hike on the Yuba in shorts and tee shirt this afternoon. May play golf tomorrow afternoon. Maybe a ride in the next couple days?

Did somebody say snow bank?

Here's the snow bank right in front of my house where the neighbor's plow guy pushes it.

I'm not kneeling or squating down to make it seem taller. Andthat is not a "kiddie size" shovel, it's full size. The snow is not just piled up on a hill, the ground actually drops off there at the side of the road (see summer photo below), The snow bank is about 10-11' tall. That thing is going to be there till late May at least.

Same view in summer (nabbed from GoogleMaps street view)

Hey,

You guys pass the hat for travel expenses, and I am your rainmaker...

...next year.

This year would be too expensive for you...cuz I'd lose my job for the eight week trip it would require for the strong rain juju needed. I'd lose my job for sure with that eight week trip, and you guys can't afford to pay a structural engineer for life. No, this year would be too expensive for you.

I think I see a patch of dirt.

Nope, just a ground squirrel coming up for air....Now I'm waiting for a hawk or an owl.

64 degrees for the ride to work tonight. Since I was wearing my summer gloves I had to put the grip heaters on low. BRRR!

Supposed to be 71F tomorrow.

Hit 60 today with 50s & 60s scheduled all next week! The snow is melting nicely today and will hopefully be gone soon. Of course, the pond is still frozen but I bet it won't hold me now.

Spring has sprung, at least in my yard. The first daffodil blooms have arrived, nice to see a color other than white or brown. Supposed to creep into the sixties but the big thing is nighttime- temps above freezing. WooHoo!! Now if we would just dry out a little more....

Yesterday: full sun and 65F for a nice all-day ride with rpm, Macon-->Albany-->Valdosta-->Waycross. Froze my ass off for three hours riding home after sunset with temps in the 40s.

This morning early: 50s for a nice little ride with MrZappo through Atlanta on deserted freeways. He and his buddy started in Chicago and are headed to Daytona Bike Week. Safe journey, fellers!
