Well after a long weekend of pondering about this new bike I am out. The bike I have is a real good fit for me right now. I was a little troubled about the low seat height and ground clearance of the Yamaha. And the smallish fuel tank, and will it have enough electical power to keep up. My GSA has a huge fuel tank, and charging system. And being a tall guy the 36" seat feels about right.
If I didn't have this bike right now (2009 BMW R1200GSA) I would be buying one. My Beemer is setup and I going to keep her for a little longer.

Good luck to all you waiters out there...

Smitty
Wowser, that was a very close one Smitty! Lucky for you I saw this as soon as you posted it. I called Schonefeld Flughafen in Berlin and was able to get Hans und Dieter from BMW Motorraden off of their Lufthansa flight. They were flying to St. Louis where a BMW sedan was waiting, then they were going to drive to Hooterville to have a "talk" with you by hand!

What is the S. TenRay's alternator output?

As well as (I might add...): will it have enough power (as in horsepower)?

There's a YouTube where MCN comparison-tests a Ducati 1200 'Multi', BMW 1200GS, and KTM 990 ADV against the S. TenRay and the one telling comment from the testers was "the Yamaha was 'down on power' (campared...)."

(the Ducati was picked by the testers...)

It may be such a competent, refined, effort that it just doesn't feel as powerful?

Hey No One where'd you get pics of my bike on the Haul road? Just kidding, wow I wonder how the front wheel stayed on the ground. BTW, who makes those engine guards in that pic of the S10? I am sure there will be lots of options in bars, skid plates etc. as time goes on. Many aluminum bag makers and Givi will just need to adapt their mounts and not the bags probably.

Power73.6kW (100 ch) @7.250 RPM

Torque

114.1 Nm (11.6kgf・m) @6,000 RPM
73.6 KW = 98.7 HP
That ain't good. Heavier than a GS and 10% less power? Not good at all.
As much as it truly pains Old Papa Chuy to have to agree with his Hijo SkooterG, GregM is right on! Having such great admiration for the products of the Yamaha Corporation, it really does surprise me they sorely missed the mark in both weight and power, against their biggest big trailie dual sport competitor: The BMW R1200GS. It is so unlike the Yamaha Research and Development Department modus operandi: They did not set a primary goal to have more horsepower and lighter weight than the BMW R1200GS. Instead, they built a machine 100 pounds heavier and with over 10% less power!

Not that it affects the Game Plan of Papa Chuy Viejo, D & H Cycles of Cullman, Alabama already has my $1,000 deposit check. My sole intent for my Super Tenere is to use it to ride to Guatemala City in October/November of 2011 with Los Hermanos Rodriquez, HotRodZilla-AJ and Patch308-Alex. If I return from Guatemala and feel that the 1200Z is woefully inadequate to the BMW R1200GS, I will simply pull a SMITTY! "DOING A SMITTY" is the new FJR Forum catchword or buzzword for riding a new motorcycle for only six months and then offloading it! This has a ring to it: "PULLING A SMITTY!"

Anybody know how to translate the torque number into lbs/ft ?

My seat of the pants estimate is around 80.

I know HP is cool, but in this type of bike I think torque is also very important.

Greg, I think you've guessed correctly with 80. BMW R1200GS is 88 lb.-ft. and 120 Nm, so 80 does make sense. Boy Howdy, once again the 10% less factor showing up. It's 10% less money though!!!

Thanks, canyonman! 84.2 lbs/ft versus 88.8 is almost a draw then, and Geezer is correct: In this type of bike torque is very important! Have you called Jerold since last Friday? I'm calling him tomorrow!

Rushes,
