Here is the letter I sent to Amigo Big-D, it's a damn shame I didn't know about the Jeep Safari until months after a dozen of us had booked the Moab RV Resort!

Please post it up to both forums, the truth never hurt anyone. I am still not deterred from going since the scheduled activities do not start until Saturday, March 23, a lot of folks will still be on the road to the Jamboree at that time. I would rather have everyone informed now, rather than them having the red *** at me for not sharing the information. Sturgis Bike Week, BMW Rallies and HOG Rallies are crowded too, but I still go to those events also!

Actually Don, you should consider yourself damn lucky you were even able to book anything over this time frame.

 
Um...SOME stretches. There are areas out there where the razor would be a blast, namely the sand dunes. The problems with a razor on some of the trails is the climbs and drop offs. They're not bad on a bike but there's no way in hell I'd try 'em on an atv or razor. I think 10 mile wash may be accessible to you and that's one I wanted to take. I'll find out and let you know. Otherwise, we can always hit one trail and you and whoever else can take another, meeting at the sand dunes or a spot for lunch. Bring a GPS and a 2-way radio if ya have one.

Brother Dan, I really do not think Jeep Safari is going to make our event all that crowded at all. https://www.moabvalleyrv.com I just got off of the phone with Stephanie of the Moab Valley Resort and she still has plenty of cabins and she said UNLIMITED tent and RV Sites, not the frenzy of past years she commented.

Right now at 1415 hours MST on 1/21/13 here are the open cabins:

1) Three Large Cabins

2) Six Econo Cabins

3) Small Cabin.

Alex and I got off the phone a bit ago. We're not thinking the Jeep ****** bags will be a huge problem. They're gonna be lined up trying to tackle near impossible obstacles such as that Bowl thing, the Lions Mane or back, or whatever the Hell its called along with Satan's *** Crack and Medusa's Vulva.

We may run into them heading from point A to point B but those encounters will hopefully be short lived. Besides, we'll be on two wheels...It'll be like lane sharing in CA...without the pavement and CHP.

 
I bet AJ would like to tackle Satan's ***-Crack.

Patch, what kind of 2-way do you have, UHF? Fairlaner and his band of Merrymen all use UHF to talk to one another. Its nice, you get range, no static and clarity, so long as you don't talk with your helmet visor open that is. I also setup my street helmet with a UHF radio with bluetooth. Its works great.

Beginning to get my MX Gear by UPS. They delivered my HJC helmet today (it fits) and I see my Gaerne boots and Klim pants are suppose to be delivered tomorrow. And the rest by Friday. All I need now is the main ingredient, a bike and I'll be all set for Moab.

 
Which dual-sport bike to buy?

Personally, if I see a KLR650 tipped over I prefer to just piss on it and then light it on fire but hey, that's just me.

I rode two of these pigs in Alaska. The first one almost lasted the trip until I hit a pothole on the Denali "Highway" and blew the rear shock seal.

The engine power reminded me of my brother's Suzuki 90cc scooter. In summary, not my favorite bike but I will say the bike is rugged except for the rear shock. The added bonus is that almost anything can be fixed on a KLR by banging on it with a rock.

 
I had actually considered going with something more street/dirt. I almost bought a Suzuki 400S, but after really considering the weight factor, I wanted something lighter and much easier to throw around. Even though the KLR is probably a fine bike for what its designed for, having it weigh in at over 400lbs, tipping over on the trail could be an unforgiving experience. When I dropped my FJR in the garage, it was a ***** to pick up and I'm a pretty big guy. With the WR weighing in at 273, only 28lbs over the YZ, its light enough to throw it around when need be. Because of the FI, the availability of larger gas tanks is limited, although I did locate a place where I can buy the IMS 3.0 gal tank for $200 even, so I might go with that. The only problem is having 3.0 gallons doesn't solve the problem, riding in Mexico with you guys I would still come up short on fuel. I would be happy with say 3.6-4.0gal, but then I don't want the bike to look as though there is this huge tumor hanging off the side of it either. We'll see, their are other items on my "want" list before a larger tank, I'm still considering a new Gold Wing F6B also, so first things first. What I really need is a bigger garage!

I posted that video above only because I thought it was cool when you can kick your bike over and not really be overly concerned. The guy in the video is correct, when dropping a $20k motorcycle, it can be a bit heart breaking. After putting the stand down on my FJR, it rolled an inch and fell over out on the highway. I claimed it on my insurance which amounted to $1300 for a simple tip-over. I now have all of the replacement parts still in the boxes they came in, only because it'll probably fall over again at some point.

I don't really think it's the price of the bike so much as it's the attitude of the rider. I have friends who would cry do drop their KLRs when it doesn't hurt my feelings to drop my GS Adventure. I also have a relatively new Toyota FJ Cruiser with custom New Mexico "pin striping" all down the sides and side steps arched up from driving off of and up REALLY steep stuff. I got my GSA, FJ, and KTM to ride and use as they were designed. Ask HRZ, when an off-road crash on my GSA was billed at $8,000.00 and change (it was pretty gnarly) my biggest concern was getting it fixed in time for our next trip. Also, my machines are RARELY polished, clean, shining specimens...I'm too busy using 'em.

 
Joe & Cec venture North, animals in hand, to partake in a BBQ competition, only to be commandeered and sidetracked to have dinner with my wife Madeleine and I at the Blackbear Diner. Funny thing, Cec realized she had gone to school a while back with the owner. We had a nice time and talked mostly about... you guessed it, motorcycles, planned destinations, the FJR Forum and how many of the members have greatly influenced our love of riding on two wheels.

. Christy is experiencing a little unexpected vocational transition putting us in a bind. Part of lifes little opportunities through change I guess. First FODS I'll miss and hopefully the last. Ok...for anyone (including the AZ Beemer guys Don) who is planning on riding dirt, re: single track, slick rock, whoops, and such (NOT DUAL SPORT), can you please give me a heads up so I have an idea of how many people to plan for. Please let me know if you want to ride the dirt as well as what your skill level is (more or less, this isn't the Baja 1000...yet...) and maybe the machine you'll be on. MOST of the trails I'll be taking will be single track MOTORCYCLE ONLY (no jeeps!!!) I'm looking at a couple on which 4-wheelers can accompany us, as I had a request for that. Keep in mind, MUCH of what we are going to ride was ridden by people who hadn't been on a dirtbike for over a decade (2 guys...not on the same bike, that's WAY to Beemerdon'ish) and they rode everything; with a fall here and there. There is one trail, Mary's Trail, that I've not ridden but would like to, however, I've heard it may be a "high consequesce" trail in that if you drop the bike the bike DROPS...as in OFF of things. I don't want to put anyones stuff at unnessessary risk so will see if I can get some more info on that one PRIOR to taking anyone on it. The other trails are mostly single track, slick rock, sand, and hard pack, with some tech spots thrown in, such as steep climbs or short drop offs of a couple feet. Most of it looks FAR more intimidating than it really is and is a hoot to ride. PLAN ON KEEPING YOUR BIKE ON THE LIGHTER SIDE OF PACKED AND IF YOU DON'T WANT SOMETHING RIPPED OFF (ie, mirrors, turn signals, bobble heads) LEAVE IT OFF FOR THE RIDE!!! Again, this is fun stuff with the potential to fall over. Well, let me know and if you have any questions feel free to hit me up. Oh, we'll be staging at "Dripping Springs" and rolling out from there.
